Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a restful, safe, healthy and happy break! It was wonderful to relax and recharge. I am looking forward to the many experiences for our students as we kick off 2022. Our first exciting event will be our One District, One Book initiative starting next week. ODOB is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across our school and community. Every student can vote on their preferred choice between two books. Each student will receive a copy of the chosen book to keep, then, every family reads it together at home while enjoying some packets from school. The shared reading experience will be supported by enriching activities at school. Please follow along the ODOB opportunities on Seesaw.
The two books the students can vote on this year are: The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, by Julie Andrews Edwards and Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, by Bruce Coville.
This is the 6th year of the ODOB. Together the PEC, IEC, MS 6th grade, and our families will embark on a literary adventure. Reading as a family will help reading comprehension, as well as bring our community together along the way.
Families will be given the opportunity to vote for the book of their choice the week of January 7th-15th, 2022 both in person or virtual. Voting will be at the Lewiston Public Library Facebook, Ransomville Free Library of Youngstown Free Library. Each family member gets a vote.
Once the book is selected and every student and staff member receives a copy of the book there will be videos of guest readers for students to view at home or in school. Once we have completed reading the book, there will be a celebration of our One District, One Book success.
The goal of this initiative is to promote reading aloud at home, and to create a culture of literacy. Reading aloud will not only provide great family time, but will also address 21st century skills of communicating, collaborating, creating, and critical thinking.
Be on the lookout for our first video to introduce the two books created by your Principals in the first week of January. We are all very excited to begin our ODOB reading adventures with each one of you. Happy January, Happy New Year!

Covid Vaccination Cards
If your child has obtained both Covid vaccinations, please make a copy of the immunization card and send it in to the nurse to be kept on file.
A fully vaccinated student (2 weeks after 2nd dose) does not need to quarantine when exposed to Covid as long as they remain asymptomatic.
Follow up Doctor’s visit after Covid Recovery
Please be advised that if your child tests positive for Covid, they need a follow up appointment with their doctor after having recovered from Covid, to return to gym in school. This appointment is usually to be seen by the Health Care Provider (HCP) 3 weeks after Covid recovery. Please reach out to your child’s Health Care Provider.
Lewiston-Porter Central School District At-Home COVID-19 Test Distribution
Dear Lewiston-Porter School Community:
As you may have heard, in response to the rising COVID-19 positivity rates throughout the state, Governor Hochul has provided school districts with antigen tests as a mitigation strategy. These at-home tests are available for families who wish to test their children following winter recess. This approach may help to prevent COVID-19 spread in schools. To be clear, this testing is:
- Optional
- Voluntary
- Not required for attendance after the winter recess
- Should not be confused with the Test-To-Stay initiative
For interested families, the dates for distribution of the at-home iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test will be:
- 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 4th, at Lewiston-Porter Community Resource Center (district office building).
- 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 5th, at Lewiston-Porter Community Resource Center (district office building).
Lewiston-Porter has enough tests to provide one box of tests for each student grades K-12. Boxes contain two tests per box. There is no charge for the tests. Please click on this link, how to use the iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test, for an administration tutorial prior to testing a child.
If a child tests positive, the parent should contact the school nurse and report the positive test result directly to the Niagara County Department of Health using this link.
Finally, since there was more opportunity for exposure over recess and for the safety of the entire learning community, masks must continue to be worn when students and staff return to school. If an individual is experiencing any symptoms related to illness, the individual should stay home and contact a medical provider.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and patience as we manage the pandemic. Stay safe and be well in 2022.
2021 IEC “JINGLE BELL” JAMBOREE To Benefit Niagara Hospice
On Wednesday Dec. 22nd the IEC students participated in a school-wide Jingle Bell Fitness Fun Walk at the IEC. Every student showcased their holiday spirit by filling the halls with the sound of jingle bells attached to their shoes.
Students participated by grade level in a 15 minute walk on the Jingle Bell course set up in our festive halls and gym.
Our students helped our community by collecting donations for Niagara Hospice previous to this event. This was the most successful year of collections by far thanks to our amazing students and families.
One IEC family and student went above and beyond for this great cause supporting Niagara Hospice in a BIG WAY!
A special THANK YOU goes out to 5th grader Desmond Toczek. Desi’s family and friends collected $1,200 to add to our school collection of $452.
$1,652 will be presented to Niagara Hospice in early January.
Well done IEC students and community! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Mini Grant Awarded to the IEC!
We are so excited to announce to Mrs. Jaruszewski’s 4th grade class and Miss Yager’s 5th grade class have won a Mini Grant from the Lewiston Porter Alumni Association. The specific project we applied for was for creating a small business plan. As part of our Social Studies curriculum, we will be learning about Economics. However, this project will also incorporate math standards and ELA standards of writing, reading, research, listening, speaking, and communication. Students will be working within their mentor groups to generate ideas for a business (goods or a service). From there, they will create a business plan after learning about how to set up a business. Students will contact local businesses for their expertise, experience, and advice through email and letter writing.
We will work on contacting businesses in the Village of Lewiston that we will have the students actually be able to visit and talk with the owners in person. Students will travel to the Village of Lewiston where they will walk through the Village as they meet in groups with different types of businesses in the community. This is an awesome way to connect our community with our school. Students will carry a “business backpack” with them filled with clipboards and other resources to collect information that will be part of their “business plan toolkit”.
Once they have gathered all of their information from the businesses, they will complete their business plan and create a model of their product or service. They will design a presentation that will incorporate technology, communication, collaboration, and innovation. Our future entrepreneurs will present their business plan/proposal ideas in an exhibition format to their classmates and at a future board meeting for board members, administration, alumni, the community, and their families.
There are many levels and parts to this particular project. It will be completed over the course of a couple months. However, the benefits and learning that will take place during this time will be far reaching into the future.
Thomas Edison once said, “The greatest invention in the world is the mind of a child.” Our looping and mentoring teams are ready to show that this is true as we enter on this awesome journey together.

Hats for Empower!
The Multi-Age program has continued their hard work knitting hats for the less fortunate in our community. The first donation went with all of the generous food donations made from our Annual Food Drive. This group of 14 hats will be donated to Empower. We hope these hats will bring warmth to those in need! The students are looking for other places to donate. Please contact Mrs. Khatib, Mrs. Danahy or Miss Block if you know of a need.
Thank you so much!
