Cedar Grove Friday Flash
March 11, 2022
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
On Tuesday, March 8, the Board of Education voted to make masks optional in MCPS. This change went into effect that same day, and now students and staff can make an individual choice about whether or not to wear a mask. Our students are doing an amazing job being kind and respecting each others decisions. Please continue to speak with your child regarding what the best decision is for your family regarding mask wearing at school. Unfortunately, our teachers will not be able to monitor your family's preference for your child, so it is important you have the discussion with your child. Please let us know if you have any questions.
During the month of February, our students we were able to divert 575 pounds of food from landfills and incinerators. They are doing an awesome job with our composting program, and we appreciate their help in making this a success!
Our second spirit night is coming up next Wednesday, March 16 at Villa Maya from 4:00-10:00 p.m. Please consider enjoying some great food, whether dining in or carrying out, while supporting our school fundraising efforts. Don't forget to mention Cedar Grove when you order!
As a reminder, Daylight Saving Time is on Sunday, March 13; be sure to set your clocks forward one hour!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German

Reminder - Please Complete the MCPS Antiracist System Audit Survey
We need your help to better understand how our schools and the school district are doing as part of our ongoing work to address racial and systemic barriers in Montgomery County Public Schools.
We encourage you to fill out this survey before March 31. You can use your mobile device or computer. The survey is part of a larger process called the MCPS Antiracist System Audit. You can learn more about the audit here.
The survey, which is anonymous and available in seven languages, will ask you about your family’s experiences with your child’s school and MCPS. The goal of the survey is for us to better understand how racism affects teaching, learning and parent engagement.
Students in grades 4 through 12 will also take an age-appropriate, anonymous version of the survey in class between March 1 and March 31. Each school will schedule its own date.
Key information about the surveys and audit:
Parents, students and staff from these organizations were actively involved in providing input and feedback on the survey questions. Sample questions and more information about the surveys can be found here.
A report will be sent to MCPS by the end of June. The report will provide results for MCPS as a whole and by each school.
MCPS will communicate the report’s findings to the community.
This website will provide updates.

Earth Day Project
As we do every year, we will honor Earth Day at Cedar Grove. This year, we will create a video project of our students letting us know about a promise they are making to our Earth. Please Fill out this form with your student -- one per student please -- and submit it by March 18. All videos and photographs are due to Mrs. Hirschhorn by April 8. Bear Day Information!
May seems like a long way away, and yet...we know it will be upon us in no time! We are going to have our traditional Bear Day celebration on May 20. Save that date! But we cannot do this without parent volunteers. Please take a moment to read this letter, which explains everything in more detail!
