The Blake Buzz

Week of January 4-8, 2016

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school! We all know that coming back to work after being off for two weeks can be very tough, but thank you for coming back energized and refreshed. Maybe you weren't today, but you faked it very well--and you WILL BE, after your sleep patterns get back to normal. I read an article yesterday that called January the "survival month" in schools because of the dreary weather and cold. I know that this will not be just a survival month for our kids, because I see every day the work you put in to make kids feel loved, welcomed, and engaged. I see interesting topics being discussed, and the way that you take boring tasks and make them fun. That's what makes elementary teachers and staff so special. You bring your own love of learning with you to school and build a love and thirst for knowledge in our students. You build them up and make them believe they can accomplish anything. You often have to be not only teacher or assistant, but also mentor, coach, counselor, social worker, and even surrogate parent for 7 hours per day. Keep doing what you are doing! It's amazing work. It's important work. You are making a difference!

MANDATORY HARASSMENT AND DISCRIMINATION VIDEO for ALL JCPS EMPLOYEES

JCPS is requiring every employee to view an 11 minute video on harassment and discrimination and pass a quiz afterward. This is required for EVERY EMPLOYEE. There is a 5 question true/false quiz required after viewing the video. EVERY EMPLOYEE will need to log into a JCPS computer with their personal credentials, access the link below, then complete the quiz. Employees will need to know their 6 digit employee ID number when completing the quiz, available on your paystub and in JCPS & Me. In order to meet the requirements of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), we must ensure EVERY EMPLOYEE has viewed the video. EEOC defines any employee as a paid employee (paycheck or stipend) whether full-time or part-time. JCPS is able to track this process and will let each principal know if there are employees who still need to take the quiz.

Teachers of Grades 3-5 only: There is also a mandatory 7 minute student video, intended for students in grades 3 – 12. There is no quiz required after viewing. Please send Susan an e-mail with the date, grade, and number of students who have viewed this video. I have to turn this in to JCPS Central Office.

STAFF SUPERHERO OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to our Staff Superhero of the Week for Dec.14-18, ASHLEY SNAWDER!!

Ashley was nominated by Meg McDonald. In Meg's words, "Ashley is the best neighbor to have! She is always willing to share ideas and supplies. Instead of getting annoyed that borrowed her stapler and forgot to return it, she bought me my own and a staple remover! It's the little things that make a difference. Ashley, I appreciate you! "

Ashley Amburgey was also nominated by Jill Calloway. In Jill's words, "Ashley is always supportive of our lunchroom incentive program. She works with us, encouraging her group to get the class paw prints and personal paw prints, too. She celebrates with her group when they win and has consequences in place when days are rough. Because of this, I have seen such positive growth in behavior for her class! Yay, Mrs. Amburgey!"

News from the PTA

The PTA would like to thank everyone who has downloaded and used the SHOPAROO app to take pictures of their receipts. Our school is very close to reaching the $200 mark in FREE MONEY, simply by snapping pictures of receipts for purchases at grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, online shopping orders, pharmacy receipts, and virtually anything that you can get a receipt for! The first grade classes all won a popcorn party last month. We can go with this again for the end of this month, or something different. The PTA has suggested a pajama day be given to the grade with the most SHOPAROO points. They welcome your suggestions and feedback. We will also have another dress down day to benefit the PTA Playground Fund this month. Whatever reward the PTA gives, it needs to be low-cost or free, so that monies earned keep adding up for the playground. If you have suggestions, feel free to contact Brittany Griffith, our PTA Teacher Representative, or Angel Murphy.

The PTA has also recently signed up Blake to earn points when you shop at Kroger. All you have to do is link your Kroger Plus card to Blake Elementary, and every time you shop, Blake earns money. You will still get your coupons and rewards, but Blake also benefits. Mrs. Murphy will send out the directions again in case you missed it the first time.

Mrs. Briggs is the Boxtop Queen!

Jeanna Briggs is our school Boxtops for Education Coordinator, and completes the tedious task of collecting and cutting and pasting all the kids' Boxtops each month. Because of her work, and our students' diligent collecting, Blake was the winner of a $500 check from Kroger. This is more FREE MONEY that can be spent on our students. The check will be presented next Monday at the Kroger on Outer Loop at 4:30 p.m. All Blake students and staff are invited for the donation ceremony and presentation of the large check. Refreshments will be served at the celebration from 4-5 p.m. Please stop by if you can join us!
