Gregor Mendel

  • Was a Austrian Monk who was born on July 22, 1822 in Heinzendorf, Austria and was basically the father of Genetics. He was so smart as a child, he went to a secondary school to expand his education. He graduated with honors in 1840 and then studied at Vienna University. He then joined the Augustinian order at the St. Thomas Monastery in Brno, Austria and discovered the basic principles of heredity through experiments in his monastery's garden.

Alfred Day Hershey

December 4, 1908 born in Owosso, Michigan. Graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor of Science. He got his Ph.D in 1934. 1969 Nobel Prize winner. Made the American Phage group. Excellent editor and writer. While he was at the University of Washington Medical School he studied bacteriophage. He and two other scientists discovered that can recombine when put in an effective host. This led to a new era of genetics.

Barbara Mcclintock

  • Born on June 16, 1902 in Hartford, CT

  • 1919 She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn

  • 1919-1925 She earns undergraduate(1923) and graduate(1925) Degrees in Botany, Cornell University

  • 1927 Received PhD(botany), Cornell University

  • 1927-1931 Instructor and Researcher in maize genetics

  • 1936-1940 Assistant Professor of Genetics, University of Missouri at Columbia

  • 1944 Elected to the National Academy of Sciences

  • 1945 Elected President, Genetics Society of America
