Lifelines: A Comprehensive Suicide Awareness and Responsiveness Program for Teens
On Monday, January 9th at 5:30pm, Trexler will be hosting an optional 8th grade parent meeting to discuss the Lifelines curriculum that will be implemented with our current 8th grade students. Lifelines is a comprehensive, school-wide program that educates school administrators, faculty and staff, parents and guardians, and students on the facts regarding the prevention of youth suicide.
The Lifelines program is designed to promote a caring, competent school community in which help-seeking behaviors are encouraged and modeled and suicidal behavior is recognized as an issue that cannot be kept secret. Lifelines seeks to increase the likelihood that school staff and students will know how to identify at-risk youth when they encounter them, provide an appropriate initial response, and obtain help, as well as be inclined to take such action. Additionally, troubled adolescents are aware of and have immediate access to helping resources and are encouraged to seek such help as an alternative to suicidal actions. Lifelines is included in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.
The Onslow County School System believes that it is very important that students receive the information that will be presented through the Lifelines program and the program is being implemented at each middle school in the eighth grade. At the same time, we realize that this is a very sensitive topic and some parents/guardians do not want their children to discuss youth suicide in a classroom setting. We encourage parents to attend this informational meeting to learn more about the program.
For more information on the Lifelines program, please visit the following URL or call the school to speak with your child's counselor:

The FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) Club
The FCA has been busy with living the motto of Showing Kindness by Helping Others. One way that they worked to help others was by sponsoring a Winter Sock Drive. The club collected donated socks during the week of December 12th-16th to benefit the Onslow County Homeless Shelter. With socks being the most needed item for homeless shelters (but the least one donated), Trexler’s FCA decided a sock drive would be a great opportunity to give back to the community and help those less fortunate. Through the generosity of Trexler students, parents, and the community, the FCA donated 276 pairs of socks to the Onslow County Homeless Shelter. Thank you so much for helping the FCA reach out to those in need! Students, please mark your calendar for the next club meeting scheduled for February 8, 2017.
The Chess Team
Students interested in being on Trexler’s Chess Team need to stop by the front office before or after school or during their lunch period to obtain a parent Permission Slip. The first practice is scheduled for January 9th from 2:30-3:30 in Room (Trailer) #260. Any student desiring to be on the team must have a signed permission slip to attend practices. Practices will be afterschool on Monday’s (not on days designated as holidays or Teacher Workdays) from January 9th through March 13th and the Trexler Chess Tournament will be on March 27th. Student performance at Trexler’s tournament will determine those who qualify for the district level tournament. If you have any questions or concerns about Chess, please email Mrs. Klompstra at elizabeth.klompstra@onslow.k12.nc.us.
Southeastern Regional Science and Engineering Fair
Trexler Middle School is proud to announce that two of our students that competed in the Onslow County Science and Engineering Fair December 13, were chosen to move onto the next level at the Southeastern Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Moving on will be 7th grader Caroline Cubas with her project, “Hear to get Ahead”. Her project looked at different types of headphones and how well they protected the ears from harmful outside noises. She created a system to test the headphones without human subjects.
Also moving on will be 6th grader Carrington Sydes with his project, “Hands-Only CPR”. In this project he wanted to see if a video game that incorporated a song with a tempo of 100 beats/minutes could teach people how to perform Hands-Only CPR. He created a video game in which the players work to create the correct tempo to perform CPR.
The Southeastern Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 in the Education Building on UNCW campus, Wilmington, NC. This event is free and open to the public. Come check out all the wonderful projects from students across the Southeastern Region and wish our two competitors good luck as they compete for honors and a chance to move on to the State Science Fair.
The Odyssy of the Mind Team
Odyssey of the Mind is a great extracurricular opportunity for students who desire to think of creative solutions to challenging problems while working together as a team. Critical thinking and team-work problem solving can be very time-consuming and therefore members of the Odyssey of the Mind team need to be willing to work long hours afterschool during scheduled practices.
If you interested, tryouts will be afterschool on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 2:30-3:30 in Room (Trailer) #260. Students are required to sign up in the front office, no later than Monday, January 9, 2017, in order to tryout. Seven students will be selected after try-outs for Trexler’s Odyssey of the Mind team. Team practices will occur on Wednesday’s from 2:30pm-4:00pm through March 1st and students will be required to attend the Regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition scheduled for March 4th at Jacksonville Commons Middle School. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Klompstra at elizabeth.klompstra@onslow.k12.nc.us. While there is a lot of time devoted to preparing for the Odyssey of the Mind competition, it is an amazing opportunity for students to extend their minds and try something new!
2017/2018 School Start & End Times
The Onslow County School District recently completed a study on adjusting school times for the 2017/2018 school year. The district extends their sincere thanks to all who provided feedback including members of the district's Quality Council. Various stakeholders reviewed start and end time proposals, projected costs associated with the changes and anticipated pros/cons and then provided their feedback on the proposals. There was a lot of good information that was provided that highlighted positive change as well as possible challenges associated with the changes. Based on the feedback, a decision was made NOT to proceed with changes to bell schedules for next year. Therefore, Trexler Middle School will remain on a 7:15am - 2:15pm schedule for the 2017/2018 school year.
