Weekly Update
Cranberry Isles School ~ February 28, 2020
I hope you all had a wonderful February break. We certainly had a fun week back with Boatworks on Monday; art, music and a lobster science presentation on Tuesday; and our annual ski trip on Wednesday. Thursday students were able to get a lot of their core academics in and Friday we had theater with Kathy Lake, where in addition to their group work, she was able to do acting coaching for each individual student.
The newsletter this week is packed with information! As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Hayley Fenton, Principal
News from the Teachers
Reading: Readers are focusing on nonfiction texts. This week we focused on text features, and how those features help us better understand what the author is trying to tell us. Students began completing a text feature scavenger hunt with various non fiction texts to become familiar with different terms.
Math: This week mathematicians worked towards meeting the following standards;
Solve subtraction word problems
Use a strategy (count-back) to subtract one-digit numbers
Represent three digit numbers up to 999
Use a strategy to add two and three digit numbers
Solve multiplication word problems
Multiple one and two digit numbers by 2
Fluently recall the twos multiplication facts
Writing: To get back into the groove of writing after vacation, writers worked on telling stories about their vacations. They used the knowledge gained from the narrative writing unit to plan and tell their stories using a variety of different types of details.
In addition to the core subjects, students and staff had a wonderful day of skiing on Wednesday! We were also lucky that Robin from the Island Institute was also able to join us for the morning. The weather was perfect at the Camden Snow Bowl and I was so impressed to see all the kids learning from their instructors and trying new things! Way to go Cranberry Isles students!
Exciting Scholarship Announcement!
The Northeast Harbor Library Scholarship Committee has a modest amount of funding available annually for Astor Special Opportunity grants. As of 2020, full-time Mount Desert Elementary School students and full-time students from the Town of Cranberry Isles schools are eligible. Also starting in 2015, students may receive only one Astor award during their entire elementary school career. Students who received an Astor award in 2014 or before may receive one additional Astor award.
Grants are made to help enable individual students to pursue activities and learning opportunities in the arts, natural and physical sciences, social sciences and personal development programs. Grant checks are issued to institutions or teachers, not the student applicants. The maximum amount awarded per student will be the lesser of (a) one half of the program cost or (b) $500.
