Annual Black History Greens Festival
Annual Black History Greens Festival
Saturday, March 4, 2023 10 am to 2 pm
Virginia Avenue Park, 2200 Virginia Avenue
Santa Monica, CA
This year's theme is We Are Family: Celebrating the Cultural Melting Pot of Black American History. The FREE event will feature greens cooking demos with Chefs Ewanda and Miche’le, book readings and giveaways, dance performances, Malik Books Bookmobile, vendors, health information, and special guest KJLH’s Arron “BOBO” Arnell will be master of ceremonies.
The program will include:
- Greens Festival opening with a dance performance by South African dancers
- Lindiwe Rose Dancer DJ music mixing by Mark Birotte
- Book reading of “Oh Charles” by author Bunny Meighan
- Spoken word performance by poet and author, Cory “Besskepp” Cofer
- Malik Books Bookmobile will offer a wide selection of culturally diverse books for sale
- Live cooking demonstrations with Chefs Ewanda and Miche’le of family favorite greens recipes
- Pico Branch Library will have book giveaways and coloring activities
- Farmers Market and featuring Master Gardeners who will be giving out seedlings
- Along with a wide variety of resource booths and vendors
Guests are encouraged to bring picnic blanket and/or lawn chairs. Walking and biking are encouraged.

3 Easy Ways to Help - SEND, DONATE, VOLUNTEER!
- SEND pledge requests via Pledgestar Currently only 10% of all students have participated (sent out email pledge requests).
- DONATE raffle items. Click here to see what raffle items are still needed. We are still in need of many raffle prizes.
- VOLUNTEER to help with activities. Click here to Volunteer. Lots of opportunities to spend time with the kiddos on campus!
ATTENTION 8TH GRADE FAMILIES - Half of all donations received from 8th-grade students will go straight to our 8th Grade Promotion Fund! Currently, only 2% of 8th graders have sent pledge requests for Spring Break-Out.
Congratulations to the following students:
- Allison Chow is one of our top earners and won an Aviator Nation beanie from Frankie's on Montana!
- Owen Adams-Mao is going to Dreamscape for a VR experience! Thanks for raising $100!
- Atticus Neal, Sophia Beckett, Will Ellison, and Sisto Price won gift cards to Randy's Donuts, The Counter, Rori's, and AMC Theaters for raising money!
- Midweek Music DJs Keilah Sayles and Alice Jimenez won Pinkberry gift cards for on-campus Spring Break-Out event participation!
- Aidan Nunez won the midweek candy tower prize!

Future Plans for the Lincoln Campus

School Tours of the Lincoln Campus
We are holding two tours for prospective parents: March 2 and 14. Both tours will last from 9-10:30am. Interested parents can sign up here. Please note that if you would like Spanish interpretation, it is important to sign up for the March 2 tour.

Wednesday Hot Chocolate! Start the day with warm hot chocolate! Hot chocolate will be for sale every Wednesday before school @8:45am! Hot chocolate + a treat will be available for $2 in front of the cafeteria and donuts at the Washington Gate. Please have your kiddos bring exact change! Click here to Volunteer.

"Spring Break-Out" - We need your help to raise $75,000 to fund school field trips, movie nights, improved classrooms, school dances, clubs, and more. It's easy to help!
- REGISTER: Make sure your child has set up a Pledgestar account. Currently, only 10% of students have sent pledge requests, so we need every parent's help. For signup instructions, click here
- DONATE: We need prizes for the grand prize awards and weekly raffles. Click here to see our donation wishlist.
- VOLUNTEER: Activities are happening on campus for the kiddos to enjoy. Each activity earns them an entry into our weekly prize drawings. Check out the Event Calendar and Volunteer Here!
The PTSA is giving out lots of prizes! Climate and Culture Survey
Santa Monica-Malibu School District (SMMUSD) has partnered with Hanover Research to conduct a short survey to gather input from students, staff, and parents about our school district’s climate and culture. We encourage you to share your opinions about your experiences in SMMUSD in order to inform the decisions made by school and district administrators.
