a note from your director

We just had a great weekend for the Jaguar Band! Let’s do a quick recap before we discuss the upcoming items!

Although not officially a Jaguar Band item exactly, we want to send our support and excitement to the Dahlstrom and McCormick MS Band programs. Saturday was their instrument selection day in which these two programs invited all incoming 5th graders to attend and select their instrument of choice for 6th grade band next year! We want to get every student possible enrolled in band! If you know of any families with incoming 6th graders that attend Dahlstrom or McCormick please encourage them to enroll in band! If they missed the instrument selection day, they simply need to contact their MS band hall and they will schedule them for a make up instrument selection opportunity! Our Middle School Band Directors, Ms. Rachael Janek and Mr. Cris Lira, are providing exciting, warm and wonderful environments for their students and are creating fantastic musicians that will become future Jaguars! The success of our amazing Jaguar Band starts HERE!!!!!!

We are proud to announce that two of our Jaguar Band Members, Antonio Musgrove and Ethan D’Amura, have been selected to participate in the National Youth Wind Ensemble. The NYWE will consist of the nation’s premier young wind, brass, and percussion performers. These incredible musicians will spend a week in the nation’s capital, with daily rehearsals led by the 2022 guest conductors, receive daily coachings with professional musicians from the D.C. area, tour the national monuments, experience military band performances at the capital, and attend the Twilight Tattoo. The 2022 experience will culminate in a performance in the historic Warner Theater in Washington D.C. on June 18, 2022. CONGRATS to both of these young men!

This Saturday was the WGI San Antonio Regional! The Johnson HS Varsity Winter Guard competed in this event along with 36 other Winter Guards from across central Texas. This was the first time the Johnson Winter Guard has competed in the WGI Scholastic Open Class Division! It was an historic date as our Johnson Winter Guard outperformed numerous powerhouse programs such as James Bowie HS (Austin) and Ronald Reagan HS (San Antonio) to become the WGI Scholastic Open Class Champion! CONGRATULATIONS to them on their incredible success this weekend!

Finally, this Saturday was the UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest held at Hays High School. We are happy to share that the Johnson Jaguar Band sent 82 students to participate in this event! What is even more exciting is that of those 82 individual performers we had a grand total of 60 of those students earned SUPERIOR ratings! A superior or 1st Division is the highest rating possible for a student to earn! The excitement doesn’t stop there! In addition to this wonderful showing from our Jaguar Band Soloists we are excited to announce that 14 of them were selected to attend and perform at the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest held in May!

As you can tell it was an awesome weekend for our entire Jaguar Band family! CONGRATULATIONS to ALL!!!

Now for this upcoming week! We have have a guest conductor/composer coming to Johnson HS to work with our bands on Thursday and Friday. We are excited for our students to have this opportunity to work with him! Later this spring the Johnson Wind Ensemble will be premiering one of his compositions that was commissioned for the opening of Johnson High School! The shortened first year and the virtual aspect of last year means this is the year that we get to perform and premiere this piece! Date and location of the premiere will be announced later this semester!

Finally, let’s talk Hawaii! The required travelers meeting is happening this Tuesday, February 8th at 6:30 in the JHS Band Hall! That means our Hawaii trip will be here soon! The excitement is growing!

As always: It’s A Great Day To Be A Jaguar!

Winterguard Competition (@ Hendrickson High School)

we need your help!

Sew...Can you help?

We need help hemming our band's concert uniforms. We will be at school after school on Monday (2/7) and Thursday (2/10) until 8pm if anyone would like to sew up at school or come pick some up and sew them at home!

Marching Band Uniform Crew Redux

One last time! Calling our Marching Band Uniform Crew to WASH uniforms and the garment bags. Once again, we will be at the school Monday (2/7) and Thursday (2/10) if you want to wash at school or take them home.

The Hosts with the Most (Texas Color Guard Circuit, March 19)

We need your help in hosting the Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC) on March 19th! As many of you will recall, this competition is very well-attended and provides us with not only an opportunity to showcase our program to the entire area (our competition date is the Class A Championship and Area Finals) but an opportunity to raise funds for the band and guard program! Last year we raised $7,900, and that was a COVID year!

This year, the competition will allow for students to stay and watch other guards, and there will be award retreats at the end of classifications! (That should be good for concession sales!)

Winterguard Fees: $200

This fee covers costs such as unitards, inventory for shoe and glove replacements, competition entries, prop supplies, design and production services, and shared cost of contributing towards production of show, including cost of floors, props and costumes.

Please note that we are able to keep these costs low by 1) contribution from boosters towards costumes and props; and 2) the small amount of funds provided by the district to the overall “band” program. (FYI each color guard costume, whether it be marching band or winter guard, costs on average $200).

You can pay your Winterguard Fee on the band website at

    • If you would like to make arrangements for payments or seek assistance with costs, please feel free to contact Ida Musgrove at We do not want costs to prevent any student from participating in guard!
