The American System
The Economic Plan
Why?
Why was this necessary, you might ask... It was necessary to strengthen and unify the nation through national economy
Protection
- Support for a high tariff to protect American industries and generate revenue for the federal government
Maintenance
- Maintenance of high public land prices to generate federal revenue
Preservation
- Preservation of the Bank of the United States to stabilize the currency and rein in risky state and local banks
International Improvement
- Development of a system of internal improvements (such as roads and canals) which would knit the nation together and be financed by the tariff and land sales revenues.
Nationalism vs. Sectionalism
Nationalism is the feeling of pride and protectiveness toward their country
- ex: common currency or language
Sectionalism is loyalty to the interest of each their own rather than whole nations
- a threat to Nationalism
- split into the North, the South and the West
