A Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
We are excited that elementaries in Monroe have been partnering with a company called Playworks to transform recess for our students! Playworks helps kids to stay active and builds valuable life skills through play. This week, we hosted a Playworks trainer at Chain Lake for a day. He was able to view our recesses, play with kids, and debrief/plan with our recess paraeducators on how to continue to make positive changes in our recesses.
Continuing to adapt and incorporate the Playworks structures and games will help us create a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills such as:
Conflict Resolution: Recess doesn’t have to be chaotic. At a better recess, kids acquire tools to work out disagreements and differences.
Leadership Skills: When they’re playing amongst their peers, kids have a valuable opportunity to develop a sense of fairness, confidence, and communication.
Academic Success: Kids who are engaged during recess are more likely to participate in class, which means better attendance and better grades.
Learn more about Playworks here: https://www.playworks.org/about/why-play/.
Next week I will be hosting a Principal Chat on Tuesday, March 29th from 9:15-10am in my Zoom Room (https://monroe-wednet.zoom.us/my/ana.apter). I look forward to seeing you there!
Warmly,
Ana

Is Your Student Attending School on a Transfer?
The deadline for families to turn in transfer requests is quickly approaching. Families living outside the Monroe School District requesting a Choice Transfer (out of district) or families living within the Monroe School District requesting an Intra-District Transfer (in district) for their child to attend a school outside of their neighborhood attendance area must complete forms to renew their transfers. This includes incoming kindergarten students. The deadline to turn in these forms to be considered for the 2022-2023 school year is Friday, April 1st. Forms received by this date will be reviewed and processed no later than April 22nd or sooner. Families will be notified shortly after. Late forms may not be considered until August.
As a reminder, all transfer forms must be renewed each year. A separate form is required for each child requesting a transfer. Forms are available online by going to https://www.monroe.wednet.edu/about/register-for-school/transfer-requests. Paper copies can be obtained at any of our school buildings or at the Monroe School District Administration Building located at 14692 179th Ave SE in Monroe. For specific questions regarding transfers, please call the District Office at (360) 804-2573. For general enrollment questions, please contact our office.
From our Chain Lake Health Room:
Just a few reminders related to our COVID protocols.
Please DO NOT send your child to school if they have any symptoms that could be related to COVID-19, even if you think they just have a cold. Without the daily attestations, we are relying on you to assess your child’s health status and appropriateness for school. Thank you for your help in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
If your child, or anyone in your household, tests positive for COVID-19, please notify the health room, principal, or front office staff right away. Please know in advance that your child(ren) will need to remain at home.
We are now able to accept at-home test results. Please email a copy of the test results to the health room. Results will be kept in the students health file.
HIPAA laws protect confidential health information, including COVID-19 status. Because of this, we are unable to share the identity of anyone in our community who tests positive. Thank you for understanding.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. The phone number in the health room is 360-804-3132 and the best email address is corriem@monroe.wednet.edu.

A Note From the Library....
It's been an incredible month in the library. We are still focusing on doing the Reading challenge with: High Trek Ropes course in Everett, Wa. and we are so grateful for that partnership again. We have also been focusing on the responsibilities of taking proper care of our library books, as there have been some issues with the barcode stickers and genre labels being peeled off by students recently so we have had some discussions about how we need to handle our books with care so that the next reader gets a chance to enjoy them. Overdue notices will be sent out next week throughout the week just to help remind students what books they currently have checked out. If there are any questions please feel free to email me at: swalwellc@monroe.wednet.edu
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Swalwell
