Halogens
By: Anna Becker
The Basics
This group is located on the left of the noble gases. They are in group 17 of the periodic table. They are toxic and non-metallic. The term "halogen" means "salt-former." Also, all halogens have 7 electrons in their outer shells.
The Halogens Include:
Fluorine
Chlorine
Bromine
Iodine
and Astatine.
Interesting Facts
These elements are all fairly toxic. They form salts when they are combined with metals. They have seven valence electrons. They are highly reactive and electronegative. Despite the fact that fluorine and chlorine are poisonous and even deadly, small amounts are actually helpful. They are found freely in nature in their pure form. Although, they even make acids when combined with hydrogen.
Uses
Fluorine- This can be used in water or toothpaste to help tooth decay.
Chlorine- This is very helpful in helping your swimming pool stay clean.
Bromine- Bromine is very useful in helping to purify water.
Iodine- disinfectant
Astatine- This is used as a radioactive tracer in cancer treatment.
