Play, Learn, & Grow in 4K
November 8th
Snow Pants, Boots, and Mittens...Oh My!!
Now that winter weather is upon us it is time to prepare for all the winter gear. The 4K children will be going outside for recess everyday. If there is snow on the ground, please send your child to school already dressed in boots and snow pants.
When sending snow clothes to school:
- Please send a separate bag for snow pants and boots
- Please label EVERYTHING
- Please send your child with mittens they can put on without difficulty. Gloves can be very tricky for some children.
- Please practice putting on shoes. Children should be wearing shoes that they can take off and put on independently. If your child has shoes that tie, please be working with them at home to tie on their own. Slip-on shoes and velcro are best for kiddos who do not know how to tie yet. :)
- Please have your child practice putting on and taking off snow clothes. Turn it into a game, set a five-minute timer and see if they can get dressed in under five minutes! This includes snow pants, boots, jackets on and zipped, hats, and mittens.
Thank you for all your help!
Pajama Day!
The Student Council at Rose Glen is supporting an all school pajama day on Friday, November 15. Have your student wear their most comfy school appropriate PJ's on Friday to show their school spirit. Please no blankets/pillows and stuffed animals should be small enough to fit in their backpacks.
Library Book Reminder
Library books are due back each Tuesday. If your child does not return their book, they will not be able to check out a new book until we receive the past weeks book back as according to library policy. If you lose your book, please contact us so we can get you in touch with the librarian on what your next steps should be. Thanks!
4K Reminders
- Please have your child go to the bathroom before arriving to school, we are finding more and more students who come in and immediately need to go. We take 2 full group bathroom breaks, 1 after recess and 1 after snack, and a 3rd bathroom break for those who say they need to go towards the end of play centers before heading home.
- With cold and flu season upon us please reinforce good hygiene habits with your children including how to cough/sneeze into your elbow and how to blow and wipe your nose. We give these reminders daily in school and are staying on top of washing hands as much as possible, but making that connection between school and home always helps!
- Book orders are due today, November 8th. Please submit orders online!
Math
We are on a roll in Math! We have now covered shapes and patterns and are on to counting and data collection. We have been focusing on counting 1-5 and 1-10 using manipulatives such as cube blocks, small bears, and dice. We are working on pointing to each object as we count and going slowly to ensure we aren't skipping ahead and keeping up with the 1:1 correspondence. Number recognition is also a big step for 4K to not only be able to count to 5 but recognize what the number 5 looks like as well. This week we started our first data collection lesson where the students are given a question and each child gets a chance to put their sticker under their answer on the chart. This weeks question was "Do you like to play in the snow?", students answered yes or no and we then looked at the data we collected to answer simple questions about which had more or less answers and how we knew.

Literacy
In our daily center routine students have begun working in small groups to write letters. We use erasable markers on alphabet books to help students understand starting at the top and using lines and curves to write each letter along with practicing naming each letter independently. During handwriting we will have a new letter of the day for each lesson, this week we looked at L. The students first listen to the letter of the day song and are asked to come up with words that start with the letter of the day. We then have a group discussion about the letter and sound it makes and write down all the words we can come up with that begin with that letter before practicing writing the letter ourselves in our handwriting books. We have also started talking about Thanksgiving and reading stories to go along with the holiday and why we celebrate it, along with discussing things we are thankful for.
Social/Emotional Growth
We have continued our discussion about feelings and are using interactive read alouds to help us identify how others are feeling and why they feel that way. This week we read Maple and Willow Apart. This story is about two sisters who are the best of friends and love playing together, but once Summer is over the older sister heads off to kindergarten leaving her little sister home to play alone. The story goes over how the girls cope with being apart and the how the older sister starts out happy and excited but eventually grows sad because she misses her sister. We use picture clues to help us tell how the girls are feeling and created a chart to show the girls' feeling progression through out the story. We then discussed again how we may start out feeling sad but can turn it around to feel happy again.
