Stanford SOAR Report
June 2021
Thank you, Stanford Community!
What a year!
Joy & Tears
Hope & Despair
Losses & Gains
Victories & Defeats
We appreciate all of the GRACE, patience, cooperation, dedication, commitment, creativity, flexibility, and determination! We will always remember this year for its hardships, but we will also remember this year for its victories. We have all lost so much this year, but we have also gained some things. We have learned and grown in ways that we never would have, without the challenges we have experienced. So, as we grieve what we have lost, we must also celebrate what we have gained.
Please join me in this dichotomy of experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
Let's continue to connect in our losses & our victories.
Please reach out to each other to share in the joys & the tears of 2020-2021.

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS!
SOCCER NEWS!
Girls' Soccer By Lucy Cuevas
The Stanford girls' soccer season of 2020-2021 has finally ended with an amazing, undefeated season and an All-City Championship. And that's all thanks to the most talented twenty girls you'll ever meet and the most awesome coach, Mr. Waddles. The girls started out with a quick 7-0 game against Washington Middle School, which led to another 7-0 win against Cubberley. It was almost "a close game" against Keller Middle School, as only a single goal went past the one and only amazing Violet Corona, our Stanford goalkeeper. Stanford was in a the three-team bracket with Washington and Keller and also had scrimmages against Cubberley and Tincher (10-0).
The Stanford girls stayed undefeated by winning a challenging game against Hughes Middle School in the All-City Championship game, beating Hughes in penalty kicks (shots scored by Melia Kukahiko, Sophia Nygaard, and Lucy Cuevas). The Hawks scored exactly forty goals while allowing just one in their season! Not only was it the keeper but a powerhouse back line of ours. Four skillful defenders, Avery Doherty, Ella Laskowski, Sophia Nygaard, and Sofia Corbett, were like boulders and crushed some dreams, especially Sophia Nygaard.
So many great friendships, laughs, and memories were made, and everyone can't wait to see each other next year at the annual Stanford Alumni Soccer game!

STUDENT TEACHERS!

Amanda Torres
When I graduated from CSULB in 2010 with a degree in Theatre Arts, I knew that I wanted to do something with my life that was creative and meaningful. After plenty, and I mean plenty of jobs as an actor, film extra, barista, fairy-godmother-in-training, nanny, and manager, I decided I would go after my original dream job of becoming a teacher, (for real, in my fifth-grade yearbook, it says that I want to be a teacher). I chose English because there is this magic that can happen in opening a book and discovering… “A Whole New World,” (sorry, Disney kid at heart). I have the pleasure of exploring a diverse group of characters, events, settings, and lives. I love working and learning with children of all ages. Middle Schoolers have this energy about them, where they don’t know whether or not to grow up or stay a kid forever. I have enjoyed my time with them and with all of the staff here at Stanford Middle School. You have all been wonderful supporters and I appreciate all of you, especially Ms. Thai. Ms. Thai has been my mentor teacher this semester, and I was so fortunate to be placed with such an amazing human being. Thank you for all of the memories! Thank you for all of the lessons! I will try to teach baby Arwen to say, GO HAWKS!

LIBRARIAN'S CORNER!
SAY/MEAN/MATTER By Mrs. Gru
Students in Mrs. Strong’s 6th grade classes learned from the Teacher Librarian, Mrs. Gru, how to elaborate on textual evidence using the SAY/MEAN/MATTER strategy. This strategy can be used across all subject areas that require an explanation, such as Performance Tasks in English, Document Based Questions in History, or to explain data in a Science experiment. Using a strategy gives students a formula or “road map” on how to use a quote in their essays.
SAY/MEAN/MATTER
What does it say?
Say it in your own words
What does it mean?
How does it support your thesis?
Give an Example
Why does it matter?
Why is it important?
Students chose inspirational quotes from Brainy Quote to find a “precept.” This concept comes from the book, Wonder, by R. J. Palacio in which the teacher has students write about quotes throughout the school year, and develop their own precepts. A precept gives advice on how to live a better life.
Using the formula, students first restate the quote in their own words, then give an example of how they could apply it in their life and finally explain how their life would be better if they followed the quote’s advice. Here are some student examples . . . Click on the image to read and enjoy!
