Class of 2020 TOP TEN Students and Honored Educators
Dear B-C-S Community:
It is with much Rocket Pride that I announce our 2020 Oak Harbor High School Top 10 Students and their "Honored Educator" who made a significant impact personally and educationally. The Top Ten Banquet where students have the opportunity to read why they selected their honored educator was originally to be held in April. It has been postponed to June 24.
For now, I direct you to the list of our Top 10 Students with their Honored Educator. I also direct you to the attachment where the student speeches have been printed. The speeches are heartwarming and speak to the noble character of both students and educators. I know that those who have been named as Honored Educators consider it an amazing tribute.
Congratulations to the Top 10 students--the best of the best of the Class of 2020--and to the educators who had such remarkable impacts on these young people!
Due to the Order of the State of Ohio
School buildings remain closed remainder of the 19-20 school year
By order of the State of Ohio, our school buildings will remain closed to students for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. Benton-Carroll-Salem School District will continue our Remote Instruction Plan through the end of this school year. The last day of teaching and learning will be May 29, 2020 (the originally scheduled last day of school).
It is important that our students remain focused on their learning for the remaining school days. The work students are completing will continue to count toward their grade. Our teachers will continue to be working with students to make sure they have the essential skills they need to be successful in the next grade level. I wish to again thank the dedication of our teachers and students for the creativity, flexibility, and resilience you have shown through this crisis.
All Spring Activities including athletics have also been cancelled: We are deeply saddened for our students who are missing out on these opportunities. We all remain very proud of you!
School Meal Update
For the Week of April 20 and beyond, we will be serving meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only. On Mondays and Wednesdays, students will get two days' worth of meals. On Fridays, students will get one day of meals.
We are making this change to limit the exposure of all involved in this process.
Meals will continue to be FREE to all Benton-Carroll-Salem students. The meal distribution site for all students will continue to be R.C. Waters Elementary School. Delivery of meals will still be available on the days we are serving meals. Please be sure to call (419) 898-6219 between 8 AM and 10 AM to request your delivery.

Mental Health and Well Being
These are challenging times for adults, and more so for young people. If you think your child can benefit from talking to a counselor, please do not hesitate to call your child's school on March 30 or after.
I also want to remind you of the Crisis Text Line:
Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis.
One suggestion for our overall mental health is for us to all get outside and walk, or do some kind of physical activity (while practicing social distancing). Something as simple as a walk can do wonders for the mood and help with anxiety.

Entrance age to Kindergarten Change
2/27/2020
TO: All Stakeholders
I am writing to make you aware that the school district has changed its policy on the entrance age to Kindergarten. Effectively immediately, each child who is five years of age on or before August 1 is eligible to enroll in Kindergarten.
Prior to this, students had to be five years of age on or before September 30.
The district has made this change based on Kindergarten readiness research, and upon the recommendation of the staff and administration of R.C. Waters Elementary School. This change is in the best interests of students who will enter Kindergarten, and will improve the prospects of their educational career. This change to August 1st also puts Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools in line with the vast majority of school districts in our area.
Sincerely,
Guy L. Parmigian
Superintendent

Remote Learning Fun!
We have been busy doing scavenger hunts around our town and homes, learning about different buildings around town, exploring living and non-living things, and identifying things we do and see in spring. We celebrated Cinco De Mayo by listening to a read-aloud and making a paper banner decoration, and we celebrated Mother’s Day by making a special card with household items such a paper, crayons, and cupcake liners. We made our own paints out of ingredients from the kitchen, and we also found many different 3D shapes throughout our homes. We even got to go on a virtual tour of RC Waters, thanks to the RCW staff.
