What's Cooking?
The HRE cafe staff is now serving breakfast and lunch on all school days to those students who would like to buy a school lunch. Hot and cold selections will be available. Student “lunch” accounts will be charged for both breakfast and lunch. For complete breakfast and lunch menus, please click here.
Note from the Office
Please remember to schedule lunch visits by calling 915-4240 between 8:15—9:00 AM the day of. Sorry, no advance lunch reservations can be handled. Lunch visits will begin after Labor Day.
When reporting an absence or late arrival, we will ask you for your child’s name, their teacher’s name and a brief reason for their absence. The direct line for our attendance is 317-915-4248. Even if you email the teacher, you MUST report the absence to the office! Thank you!
From the HRE Clinic
URGENT! Please complete the on-line health card which you will find in Skyward. It is critical that we have every student’s health information on file. Thank you!!
As a reminder, there is not a nurse on duty outside of normal school hours and all medications are kept secured in the nurse’s office. If your child participates in a before or after school sponsored activity and you would like for your student’s emergency medication to be made available, please notify the nurse in advance in order to make these arrangements. You may contact either Shawn Fleenor in the morning or Kelly Mullen in the afternoon. Both may be reached by phone at 915-4240.
Outdoor Recess
Even though fall is fast approaching, we will still experience many summer-like days! As a rule, if the temperature is less than 95 degrees Fahrenheit, students will go outside for their full recess. When the temperature is at or above 95 degrees Fahrenheit or the humidity is at or above 95%, recess time will be at the discretion of teachers or the principal who may choose to shorten the time outdoors or stay inside.
Teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess; students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess. All outdoor recess and activities will be canceled when temperatures soar to 100 degrees or higher. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
If your child is prone to sunburn, please make sure to help them apply sunscreen at home each day before they come to school as it is not provided by teachers. Also, remember that kids love to run and play—so please make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather including no flip flops which tend to fall off, break, cause stubbed toes or inhibit play!

HRE Guidelines for Driver Drop-off and Pick-up Line
In an effort to insure the safety of our student body and staff, we ask all drivers to follow these guidelines when dropping off and picking up students:
- Absolutely NO CELL PHONE USAGE in the car line. Full attention must be given while unloading and loading children.
- DO NOT PULL AROUND OTHER VEHICLES in the car line, unless directed to do so by staff members. SINGLE FILE TRAFFIC ONLY while unloading and loading children.
- Children should exit and enter vehicles from the PASSENGER SIDE ONLY. This insures students a safe path to the sidewalk. PARENTS SHOULD REMAIN IN THE VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES. Staff members will assist those students who need help exiting or entering a vehicle. For student safety, we DO NOT allow parents to park vehicles and walk up to receive children unless previously approved through school administration.
- Common driver courtesy is required at all times.
What to Do if You Suspect a Disability

- For students who are eligible for kindergarten through age 21, you should contact your child’s teacher, school counselor or building administrator to discuss your concerns and explore the steps to be taken. Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to the student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.

Volunteers and Lunch Visitors
Hoosier Road Elementary always has many opportunities for parents to become involved. Whether it’s through volunteering in the classroom or a PTO event, attending classroom activities or even eating lunch with your child, you must have a valid background check on file and view the anti-bullying training on-line. Background checks are valid for three years. Please allow up to 6 business days for checks to be completed. Please follow this link for complete directions: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
We want you to be able to interact with our students but we also need to adhere to strict safety guidelines set forth by our school district. Look for an email from Safe Visitor Solutions which will issue a bar code unique to you. Please bring that bar code (on your phone or on paper) on your first visit to HRE so we may take your photo! Thank you for your compliance and for helping to keep all of our students safe.
School Directory
We have had a number of parents wanting to find ways to schedule playdates, parties, etc. with their children’s classmates. HSE has made this possible with our Online School Directory. This service is only available for those families that choose to “OPT IN”.
You may select what information you would like other parents to see (such as address, phone numbers) for birthday invitations and the like. If you would like to “OPT IN” please follow the steps below:
- Login to Skyward
- Click on “MY ACCOUNT” tab in the upper right corner
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the School Directory section
- Choose which information you would like to share
- Click Save in the upper right corner
Please note that the only people that will have access to this, are the families at Hoosier Road Elementary. If you have older children at other schools, their information will only be shared with the families at their school. We hope this will help our students to be able to stay connected outside of school hours.
