Back to School Welcome Information

Are you ready for the first day of school?

Dear Glennwood Families,

Welcome to Glennwood Elementary, home of the Eagles! We are excited that you are joining us for the 2023-2024 school year. As we prepare for your child’s arrival, we would like to share this important information in the hopes that it will give answers to many of the topics you may be pondering. We look forward to an amazing school year! As always, we are available by phone and email to address any school-related needs you may have.

Glennwood Elementary is proud to be an EL Education school. For over 25 years, EL Education has been bringing to life a three-dimensional vision of student achievement that includes Mastery of Knowledge and Skills (MKS), High Quality Work and Character. Our school vision is that our classrooms are student-centered communities with evidence of perseverance, collaboration and craftsmanship. We believe that students should be leaders of their own learning and that we are Crew, not passengers. You will see and hear many references to Crew as we move through our school year. We will provide opportunities throughout the year for families to learn more about what it means to be part of an EL school community!

Intentional teaching/learning practices, racial equity, shared school governance as well as personal and collective accountability will be our continued focus this school year. Our Crew is sure to achieve success in our academic and social-emotional pursuits!

We have a phenomenal administration team here at Glennwood. Summer Clayton is our Assistant Principal; Jill Tolsma is our Instructional Coach; Jonathan Blase is our School Counselor and Michelle Reynolds is our School Manager. All can help with any questions or concerns you might have.

We are looking forward to welcoming our students and families to Glennwood. It is going to be the best school year yet!

Sincerely,

Dr. Holly M. Brookins

Principal

Class Assignments

Parents will be able to log into the Parent Portal on July 27th at 8am to see who their child’s teacher will be. Class placement is a high priority for our staff and we are very intentional about this process each year. Class changes after this date will only be made under extreme circumstances.

Meet and Greet

All K-2 schools have their Meet & Greet scheduled for Friday, July 28th from 1:00-3:00. This is a brief opportunity for parents, students and teachers to meet one another and for students to familiarize themselves with the school and the classroom. In order to be efficient and keep things running smoothly, kindergarten families may arrive between 1:00 and 2:00, while 1st and 2nd grade families may arrive between 2:00 and 3:00. The amazing GL PTA will be stationed in the media center - please pay them a visit!

First Day of School

We will welcome students for our first day of school on Tuesday, August 1st. Our school hours are 8:20-2:50. Students may be dropped off in the mornings at 8:00 am. Breakfast will be offered between 8-8:20 each morning. Dismissal begins at 2:50. The GL PTA will host its annual Cheers and Tears (coffee and donuts) for parents in the front of the school immediately after drop-off from 8:20am-9:20am. (In case of rain, it will be scheduled in the media center.)

School Supply Info

If you ordered school supplies through PTA, they will be delivered directly to the school, and the GL PTA will sort and deliver the goods to classrooms. You don’t need to do anything to ensure their delivery (except volunteer with the PTA)! If you need to purchase school supplies, please find the requested lists here. If purchasing the supplies on your own they may be brought to school during the Meet and Greet or any day the first week of school. We never want any of our families to feel burdened by school supplies, so if this places an undue financial burden on your family, please do not feel the need to purchase them. We will always ensure that all of our students have adequate supplies.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students that walk to school should enter through our front entrance. Parents can give them a huge hug and your well-wishes right outside the door, and we will escort them into the school to their teachers. Kindergarten students arriving by car will enter the building through our side doors near the auditorium at the carpool circle. There they will be united with a staff member who will escort them to the auditorium to meet their teacher before being walked to class.
