Tips From the Office...

Please let the office know as soon as possible if your child is going to be tardy or absent from school. You can call the office or email sfsdedisonattendance@k12.sd.us. If your child is leaving early from school for any reason, please try and let the office know before school starts to avoid classroom disruption.

Student Check In/Out Procedure- You do NOT need to walk your student in to school to check them in if they are late or returning from an appointment. When a student is checking OUT we do need to see the adult that is picking them up in the office. If you are unable to come inside, call the office and we will have a staff member walk your student out to their ride to verify who is picking them up.

Please call or email the office if you have any questions.

News from the Counseling Office

October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month! Edison Middle School wants to help bring awareness to the fairly common and also highly preventable and curable mental health issue. Depression affects approximately 7-8% of the U.S. Did you know that there are many lifestyle factors and daily habits we choose that can either prevent depression or contribute to depression? The month of October we will dive a little deeper into ways people young and old can help prevent depression. To help educate students we will be celebrating National Depression Education and Awareness Month with dress up days the week of October 17th-21st. Each day of the week is linked to a strategy to live a healthy lifestyle, support good mental health, and prevent depression.

Monday Oct. 17th- Wear Bright Colors/neon- spending at least 30 minutes a day outdoors helps the body absorb vitamin D. Low levels of Vitamin D are directly linked to depression.

Tuesday Oct. 18th- Twin Day- Having 3 or more very close, trusting, loving personal relationships boosts serotonin levels in the brain and helps prevent depression.

Wednesday Oct. 19th- Sports/Fitness Day- 30 minutes of moderate exercise 4 or more days per week boosts dopamine levels in the brain and can prevent depression.

Thursday Oct. 20th- Pajama Day- getting 8-10 hours of sleep a night and following a routine "bedtime" and "waking time" helps restore brain function and balance neurotransmitters in brain, helping to prevent depression.

Friday Oct. 21st- School Spirit Day- Having multiple healthy and productive hobbies or passions boosts serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, preventing depression symptoms.
