WEEK OF OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 4TH

We all had a lot of fun celebrating Red Ribbon Week and Being Drug Free! I've attached some pictures on the newsletter for you to see. Thank you all who also provided canned food items for our local food pantries! It helps us feel good to help others.

We apologize for not receiving the fundraiser items last Friday. The new pick up date is this Wednesday, November 2nd. Please plan to pick up your fundraiser items after school and before 6:00 PM. The students are excited to receive their prizes as well. Thank you!

Tomorrow is Halloween. We celebrated mostly on Friday and there were several Fall Festivals going on. While we know this day is important to a lot of our students, we ask that you do not dress your child up in costume as we will be continuing to teach and learn. We will have you save that fun for after school. Thank you for your support in this.

Kenwood Elementary School received a BIG CHECK for $3,800 from the CLASS ACT FOUNDATION. This money will go towards our book vending machine that we are fundraising for. Thank you again to all of the donors in making our wishes come true. In addition to this check, our Kenwood Reading Committee applied for a grant through CLASS ACT and they received $1,000! We are almost to our goal of $6500. If you'd like to donate, please see the Ways to Give to Kenwood button on the newsletter.

Looking ahead in November, there are some dates to plan for. No school on November 14th due to professional development and no school on November 23rd through the 25th due to Thanksgiving. We cherish all of the days that we have your children at school. Please try to make appointments on these dates as much as possible. We appreciate it!

Have a great week!

SECOND STEP WEEKLY FOCUS-SAME AND DIFFERENT FEELINGS

We all want to have friends here at school. But people can have similar or different feelings about the same situation. For example, I might feel scared to climb up high, and my friend might feel excited. Learning to respect other people’s feelings can help us make and keep friends! This week, notice other people’s feelings and whether they’re the same or different from yours.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 24-28TH

We capped off the first quarter with an assembly on Tuesday. During the assemblies, we recognize the students who earned the Key of Integrity. Classroom teachers, specialists, reading and special education teachers selected a student who had exhibited integrity during the first quarter. Integrity, in student terms, means "If you know what is right and you do what is right, that's integrity." We are super proud of the thirty six students who were chosen to receive this award. The first quarter reading challenge winners were also recognized along with Golden Awards which the specials teachers award to classes who demonstrate appropriate behaviors as well. We look forward to our next assembly tentatively scheduled for December 21st. The students enjoy the sing-a-long as it's the last day before winter break.

Next week is Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena back in 1985. After his death, people started wearing red ribbons to honor Kiki's sacrifice. Across the district, all elementary schools are celebrating life drug-free by asking students to dress up during the week. This is optional. Please see the dress up days listed below. *Side note-we do not celebrate Halloween so please do not send your child in costume on Monday, October 31st. Save that fun for the evening.

Fundraiser pick up is this Friday, October 28th. Please make arrangements to pick up your fundraiser items after school until 6:00 PM. It's important that you get all items taken care of on this day. THANK YOU!

SECOND STEP WEEKLY FOCUS-IDENTIFYING FEELINGS

We’re all learning to identify our own and others’ feelings. We can focus our attention on someone’s face or body and on the situation for clues about how the person is feeling. Sometimes people’s voices and the words they say also give us clues. If someone is yelling, it might be that this person is angry. If a person is using a very quiet voice, it might be that the person is scared or worried. This week, listen to people’s voices for clues to figure out how they might be feeling

WEEK OF OCTOBER 17TH-21ST

We hope you enjoyed your three day break. Our teachers were busy getting report cards ready along with planning for the next quarter. This week we have Healthy Snack Sales and PTO is asking 4th graders to donate the items. Remind your child to bring some quarters on Friday so they can purchase some snacks that day. Any remaining snacks can be purchased after school as well.

Looking into the weeks ahead we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 24th-28th. Please see the newsletter for the fun dress up opportunities to celebrate being Drug Free. Also, we do NOT celebrate Halloween at school but we do have Fall parties or festivals. Please do not have your children wear their costumes to school on October 31st. They can dress up for Red Ribbon Week instead. Thank you for your support and cooperation in advance.

Run Club has finished for the year. We are super proud of all of our runners! We also had several students who finished two marathons and one student who finished THREE! That's amazing. This couldn't have happened without all of the parent volunteers and especially the McCartney's. Thank you so much for making this happen for our students!

The PTO fundraiser went amazing this year. Our school profited over $14,000 with your support. Our fundraiser item pick up date is October 28th so put that in your calendar if your child sent in paper orders.

Second Step Weekly Focus-Empathy

This month, our schoolwide theme is empathy. In our morning announcements, we’ll be reminding students to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 10TH-14TH

Last week was a crazy and busy one. I want to thank the PTO for organizing and running the first Walking Taco night before the Kearney High School volleyball game. I'm always so in awe of the support that we receive from our parents and their children who like to help out.

Here are this week's highlights:

Fire Prevention Week

  • Monday--Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day
  • Tuesday-Firefighter Greeting in the morning, PTO meeting at 7 pm. We will meet in the art room.
  • Wednesday-Walk and/or Bike to School Day
  • Thursday-end of the 1st quarter
  • Friday-No school for professional development and teacher grading/work time

More information on the Walk and/or Bike to School Day: High school athletes and our Kenwood Fuel Up to Play 60 team members will be greeting students near the 11th Ave and 8th Street crosswalks to give walkers and bikers a sticker that will be their ticket into a prize drawing. Students can also be dropped off at the Centennial Park/Pool Parking lot after 7:25. Student-athletes will be there to walk groups of Kenwood students to school. The last group will leave the park at 7:40. Please do not drop your child off at Centennial if there are not yet high school athletes there and please do not drop them at Centennial if they need to eat breakfast at school.

Looking into the weeks ahead we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 24th-28th. Please see the newsletter for the fun dress up opportunities to celebrate being Drug Free. In celebration and recognition of the U.S. Constitution, the clubs are giving each K-12 student a copy of the Constitution. Participating schools include Kearney Public Schools, Faith Christian School, and Kearney Catholic School.

Thank you to both of these clubs for helping our students learn more about the constitution.

Second Step Weekly Lesson-Being Assertive

Learning means doing something new every day. Sometimes when we're doing something new, we get stuck and don't know what to do. If we get stuck, we can use a skill for learning-being assertive-to ask for help. Being assertive means asking for what you need or want in a calm, firm, respectful way. Face the person you are talking to, and keep your head up and shoulders back. When you can't figure out what to do in class, remember to be assertive and ask for help.

LUNCH

Parents are invited to lunch BUT we ask that you contact the school ahead of time so we can inform the Bearcat Diner of your order or other changes in schedules. Lunch times are also found on the Kenwood website. The month of May will be off limits as there are too many schedule conflicts to organize and work around so if you plan on coming, please do so before then. If you choose to bring fast food or other restaurant types of food, we will have you eat in the office or conference room area as it causes hard feelings for those who don't have those options.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 3RD-7TH

Thanks to all of you who participated or donated for our PTO Fundraiser. We will have totals hopefully next week.

We had 93% of our students represented at parent-teacher conferences. Thank you to all that attended as it really helps show the importance of education in their lives. We will continue to strive for 100% next February when we have conferences again.

This week at school students in grades 2 through 5 will complete a Trusted Adult Survey. More information is in the attachment on your email.

Tuesday is our elementary night at Kearney High School volleyball. The game is slated for 6:30 PM. Remember to wear your Kenwood gear or a KHS bearcat attire or just tell admissions that you're from Kenwood. You must have a paying adult with you. We will sit on the east side. Also, remember if you ordered walking tacos to stop by Kenwood from 5 to 6. More information will be forthcoming. If you'd like to donate, click on this link: Walking Taco Donation Link

On Wednesday afternoon students in grades 1 through 4 will do a hearing and dental screening.

The third graders will travel to the Merryman Performing Arts Center this Thursday afternoon as they will be watching Backtrack Vocals.

That's it for this week. Have a wonderful evening!

Second Step Weekly Focus-Positive Self-Talk

This is another great week for learning at our school. An important skill for learning is using self-talk. Self-talk means talking to ourselves in a quiet voice or in our heads. Self-talk can help us stay on task and focus attention. Think about what you might use if you were trying to remember directions your teacher gave you, Remember to use self-talk today when you need to stay focused and on task!

SCHOOL-WIDE ART MURAL

This turned out amazing! Thank you to Mrs. Raffaeli, Kenwood art teacher, for working with all Kenwood students on this "TEAM" art mural. Each hand has specific details of each individual student of our school. Our theme this year is just that "Together Everyone Achieves More" and this demonstrates that when we do work together, it can make a beautiful piece of art! I absolutely love this and how awesome it turned out! Come see it by our art room!
