The Importance of Independence and Observation
This month we are looking at a student immersed in hands-on work while another student observes.
This image shows two children immersed in learning. The absence of an adult teacher is notable, as one young boy manipulates a didactic material that has been previously demonstrated to him by the classroom guide. His learning occurs through his own, hands-on exploration of the material. Another young boy un-obtrusively observes his work with great interest. While it could easily be assumed that this young boy is doing nothing, a skilled Montessori guide recognizes that the child who is observing with such focus is indeed engaged in learning and that his careful study through observation will lay the groundwork for his own future experiences with the material.
Sometimes a child will be able to repeat a work without a formal lesson. It is also possible that the older child might ask the younger one if they would like to have a lesson. The success comes with the younger child’s familiarity with the work. This happens as an observer and then with hands-on experience.

Staff Spotlight
Ms. Blair - Community and Communications Coordinator
Ms. Blair is also our Service Learning Coordinator. She oversees the program by creating connections with different organizations in our community to allow our middle school students to travel off-campus to serve. She also organizes opportunities for other grade levels to serve on campus through donation drives, IMS campus clean-up, beautification, and passion projects. Ms. Blair supports, plans, and participates in school-wide events such as our kick-off party, fundraiser events, and much more! Her dedication earned her an award from the National Charter School Association for her work with Service Learning!
Ms. Blair has a passion for service. She is always looking for ways to serve and help others. Her strength is in igniting passion in others and supporting their visions and dreams to success. We are fortunate to have her in this role. She has taken a program of service learning to the next level.
Ms. Blair lives on the island with her husband and four pups! She is closely involved with our school and other community organizations such as DREAMS, LifePoint Church, Town of Carolina Beach, and Kayak Carolina.
