October Kindness Challenge
Keeping our Focus on Kindness
This year at Madison elementary we are focusing on kindness and being kind to one another all year long. This is a great life skill that serves our students for years beyond their elementary education. The biggest way we are emphasizing kindness is through monthly KINDNESS CHALLENGES. These kindness challenges are an important element of meeting the needs of the whole child, especially the engaged tenant - Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.
The October Kindness Challenge is listed below. Forms will be sent home on Friday, October 5 or can be picked up at the display case across from the cafeteria by the library. Let's see how large our kindness pumpkin patch will grow throughout the month of October!
Gum Day
In order for this event to be a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, we have two expectations. Our expectations for the gum include: the gum is to be in your mouth or in the trash (we don't want any gum to find its way to the floor, desks, or walls) and if the gum is being played with, the student's pass will be removed for the day.
Thank you for your continued support of our Paw Pals fund at Madison!
Back Snacks at Madison
Harvesters’ BackSnack program provides a weekly backpack filled with nutritious, child-friendly food for schoolchildren to take home over the weekend. More than 100,000 children in Harvesters' service area receive free and reduced-price school meals during the week, and many of those are at risk of hunger on weekends.
Back Snack is a partnership between Harvesters, a participating school, and a local community partner—usually a corporate, civic or religious organization. Harvesters provides the food and the backpacks. The local community partners help facilitate picking up the Back Snack food kits from Harvesters and distributing them to the schools. School principals and/or counselors determine which children receive Back Snacks at each school. Back Snack addresses our whole child tenant of healthy children as we know students who are hungry are not able to learn.
If you believe your child would benefit from these back snacks and would like to sign them up to participate please contact Mrs. McLeod at 913-856-0409 or mcleodt@usd231.com.

Third-Grade Musical
Who: 3rd Grade
What: Musical, The River Child by John Jacobson
When: October 4th, 7:00 PM
Where: Madison Elementary stage
Dear third-grade families,
We are excited to announce that we are working on The River Child for our first musical of the year! This musical explores 5 different rivers around the world and highlights different cultures. Each 3rd-grade class is in charge of a different scene/river. Patterson: the Rhine in Germany, Harding: the Amazon in South America, Sikes: the Mississippi in North America, O’Grady: the Yangtze in China, and Watchous: the Nile in Africa.
Due to the differing culture scenes, each class will have different costumes. These can be as simple or creative as you like; however, if any parents have something at home that falls into another class’s theme or would like to contribute props, please let me know! (I will send out some costuming ideas for specific characters later on)
Basic Costuming Guidelines:
All Students: black, khaki or jean bottoms, plain colored T-shirts.
The River Nile:
Colorful fabrics wrapped for each African country. Ladies may wear colorful skirts or fabric to be wrapped like a skirt. Many countries also wrap fabric around the head as a headdress.
Mississippi:
Blue jeans, overalls, t-shirts. OR Jazz style dress: all black with bowler hats (hats provided)
Amazon:
Colorful clothing, Latin American style.
The Rhine:
Sailor theme, townswomen in skirts/blouses/aprons OR German/ Austrian dance clothing
The Yangtze:
Oversized dark colored shirts and colored pants
Asian Conical Farm hats (I will look into finding some of these. I don’t expect anyone to own those)
Kimono style coats (if by chance anyone has these)? OR Traditional Chinese costumes.
Every child’s role is important in this musical, I look forward to this performance! As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
We will have a dress rehearsal assembly at 2:00. Due to the limited space in the gymnasium and the number of students we have at Madison, we ask that families do not attend the dress rehearsal so that all the other grade level students can attend and experience the music performance. Thank you for your understanding and support.
Thank you,
Ms. Christina Metzger

Dental Screenings
Oral health is an important part of children’s overall health and is a critical component in the
child’s ability to learn and succeed in school. A healthy student is a key tenant of the Whole Child. In compliance with Kansas State Statute 72‐5201, Gardner Edgerton USD 231 will be providing a free dental screening to all students enrolled in K, 2nd and 4th grade. These students will be screened unless the parent/guardian does not want the child to participate. If your child does participate, you will only be notified of results if the screening warrants follow up or referral. If you prefer your child opt out of the screening, please email Nurse Amy or send a signed written note to school prior to Thursday, October 4th. Please feel free to contact Nurse Amy with any questions or concerns. Thank you!
