Reading Olympics, 2023

What an experience for over 40 fourth and fifth graders at Reading Olympics Tuesday night. Supported by 9 faculty members, students competed against other similarly-aged students from SASD and other surrounding school districts sharing their knowledge that they've read over the past few months. What a celebration of reading and effort. And they did well, snagging three red and one blue ribbons. We'll honor students at the end of year participation assembly in June.

Teach Girls Tech

SH was delighted to welcome high school students last Wednesday who shared a presentation about "producing" tech, not consuming to 20 fortunate 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls. The discussion was lively and participants came away with a new found skill that they'll use as a springboard for further adventures. In addition to Challenge Teacher Heather Williams who organized the event, thanks to SASH for sharing these experts with us and inspiring others to consider a career in technology.

Enjoy a brief slideshow video of the afternoon.

4th Graders Explore Harrisburg and Hershey

On one of the most memorable days of 4th grade, our 4th grade classes enjoyed a spirited trip to Harrisburg and Hershey, touring the Capitol, the state museum, and Chocolate World. The adventure was a perfect supplement to their course of study in Social Studies as they examine more closely the state we live in.

Successful Lip Sync with an Unexpected Ending

With over 170 participants and 47 acts (including a teacher act and 5th grade act), it's clear that they'll be a 36th annual Lip Sync next year. And as luck would have it, we'll need to finish the 35th at our next school meeting.

We were three acts away from wrapping up an extremely successful show when the lights when out and the emergency lights flickered on. Soon the news came that transformers blew and all hope of waiting it out vanished. So an awesome night ended on somewhat of a sour note (no pun intended).

Including the fifth grade act (35 students), we'll plan for the final three acts at the next school meeting. And the really good news is that SASD will be at Salford Hills to record, adding to the digital recording from Friday night.

And...

While we're waiting for the official district digital recording, enjoy this BRIEF SLIDESHOW of a few Lip Sync stills.

Playground Revitalization Campaign

This year, spurred by the addition of full-day Kindergarten, a small committee began discussing how we could improve our playground as it lacks enough developmentally appropriate options for younger children. The conversation evolved into how we could potentially revitalize the entire SH playground experience through upgraded equipment for all ages, encouraging exploration and imaginative play, and better utilizing the blacktop as a safe play space. However, playgrounds are not funded by the state but rather partially through teacher-requested grants or more likely – Home & School associations. Therefore, in order to fund such a significant project, we will need to add fundraisers in addition to our annual Race for Education. The Race for Education has always been a wonderful and effective fundraiser as it funds ALL of our numerous activities, assemblies, field trips and so much more. Home & School could not function without it. Additional fundraisers would not replace the Race for Education, but specifically raise money for the Playground Revitalization Campaign.

Our expectation is that the playground will be a 3-5 year project, with the potential to make certain enhancements each year. This year will focus on Phase 1 (small scale, big impact) -- addressing some immediate needs and creating a better play space on the blacktop. This is a new and evolving endeavor that we hope will benefit children for years to come. Please feel free to email your ideas, questions or concerns to board@salfordhillshsa.org. Thank you for your support!
