ORS Coordinated School Health News

February 2021

A Note from your Coordinator

It's officially American Heart Month! This month we will be spotlighting and educating about the #1 cause of death in the United States, heart disease. In this newsletter, you will want to check out:

  • Heart Trivia Contest
  • Healthy Heart Information
  • Biggest Loser Competition
  • Free Blood Pressure Checks
  • Exercise equipment donations needed

We are doing amazing things everyday in Oak Ridge Schools! I would love to highlight that in this newsletter. If your school is doing something to improve health, please let me know. As always, follow CSH on facebook and twitter for the most up to date information.

Heart Health Trivia Contest

Congratulations to January's CSH Winners who won a drink from Oak Ridge Nutrition: Deanna Pickel (ORHS), David Kolodney (ORHS), Tammy Souza (ORHS) and Jennifer Conner (Tech Dept)! For this month's contest, you will need to answer two trivia questions from reading the newsletter:

1) What is the number #1 cause of death in the United States?

2) What are 3 things you can do ( according to the American Heart Association) to reduce your chances of developing heart disease?

Just send an email with the answers to mkwade@ortn.edu by next Wednesday February 10th. CSH will draw 5 names out of the entries for another free shake from Oak Ridge Nutrition!

Good luck!

Congratulations to Glenwood Elementary and Oak Ridge High School!

Congratulations to Glenwood Elementary and Oak Ridge High School for winning the RETHINK YOUR DRINK competition last week! Glenwood filled up 983 bottles of water to win the elementary division and ORHS filled up 413 to win the middle/high school division.

Thanks to all the schools that participated and encouraged their students and staff to rethink their drink and choose water over sugary beverages.

Exercise Equipment Needed

CSH is working on a project for the district and is looking for donations of exercise equipment that are in good working condition. If you have a treadmill, bike, elliptical, tv or other exercise equipment you would like to donate, please email mkwade@ortn.edu.

Thank you!

Free Blood Pressure Checks

The Health Science Students at ORHS are offering to do Free Blood pressure and pulse checks at your school! Unfortunately due to COVID the students have not been able to do their typical clinical experiences and work with actual patients. They would love to come to your school and get to practice their skills.

There is a clinic already set up on February 16th and 18th in the board room at SAB from 8:15 am-9:15 am for all school employees that are available.

If your school would be interested in having them come out (in small groups and following COVID protocol), please contact Sonya Minarik at srminarik@ortn.edu.
