Big Idea 1

How did religion control or influence their lives?

In India, almost everything was based off of religion. At least 90% of anything considered modern at that time was based on Hinduism and Buddhism. Schools and Universities taught Hinduism and Buddhism, either one or the other. If you went to school, these religions influenced your daily life. Things they studied in school and became experts on were things like, logic, philosophy, grammar, art and medicines. During the Gupta Empire, or the Golden Age, the Ajanta and Ellora caves were created. These were filled and decorated with paintings and artwork of religious figures, some Buddhist and some Hindu, showing how this religion made up artwork. Also, the Golden Age was not recognized by wealth or stance in warfare, it was determined by the religion and creativity. In India, there was also blatant evidence that this religion controlled Indian lives. In this civilization, laws were put around town inscribed on rocks, walls and plates. But, there were also religious principles in these rules, and some people followed all of them, so they were basically a guide for life.

Big Idea 2

How does religion impact lives in the modern world?

One innovation was their new medicines. This impacted India because they were able to give inoculations against disease. This allowed our modern day doctors to know how to treat the diseases and sicknesses. They also allowed modern day doctors to know to keep open wounds clean to prevent infections. Another innovation in classical India was Arabic numerals (1-9) These impacted the modern day counting system. They also created the use of decimals and the number 0. These impacted the modern day because then we would not have any numbers or decimals.
