Happy September Pirate Families!
Good afternoon Pirate families! I am so thankful that our area received minimal damage from Dorian and we will be able to return to school tomorrow. Please continue to keep those that were impacted by the storm in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to contribute relief items for our neighbors on the Outer Banks, please drop off items in our main lobby. It was wonderful all the support that our school community received after Florence, it would be great to pay it forward. We will have more details to come. We will resume with our Kindergarten Color Days with Yellow on Monday, Blue on Tuesday, Green on Wednesday, Purple on Thursday and White on Friday! Students in all grades levels can participate if they would like! Tomorrow is the last day to turn in your completed Summer Bingo sheet to Mrs. Lynch in order to be eligible for the prize. Candy Man fundraiser packets went home with students on Tuesday. All orders are due September 17th. Funds raised go back to our students for instructional needs. Tuesday Night is our PaPa John’s Spirit Night 4-8 pm. On Wednesday at 7 am our Strategic Planning Team will meet. The PTO mtg and volunteer training scheduled for last week has been rescheduled for this Wednesday at 8:30 am in the cafeteria and 6 pm in the media center. If you are looking to get involved in our school, you will definitely want to attend one of these meetings! On Friday we will have a mass hearing screening focusing on first & second grade students. I'm looking forward to another amazing week at SBES!
Meet the newest members of our Pirate family: Midnight & Moonlight!
We are so proud of Mrs. Lynch for being one of the top 10 finalist for Onslow County Teacher of the Year. She's the BEST!

TRANSPORTATION
Car Riders-
· * Please make sure that your Yellow Placard hanging from your rear view mirror. If you do not have a placard, you will need to park in a designated parking space and come to the main office to sign the student out.
· * In the mornings, any lane will do (there are no grade specific lanes in the AM) just fill in all lanes, except for the lane to the far left which is reserved for buses in the morning. Also in the mornings, we will come to your car and open the door. Do not just drop students off.
· * In the afternoons, use the designated lane for the grade level of the youngest student. We will bring students to you. Please stay in your car.
· *Please stay to the right in your lane until you reach the fence (do not pull over to the left behind the furniture store). Please do NOT block any entrances/exits. Please allow all cars to exit before filing into the loading zone. Allowing others to exit will expedite our process.
· * Please wait for staff to dismiss the first car in each lane. Before moving, always scan to make sure that everyone is a safe distance from your vehicle.
· * Car riders are not dismissed until 3:05. There is no need to arrive excessively early. If so, you may be asked to come in and volunteer :) Please do not idle.
.* Students are not allowed to be checked out from 2:55-3:15 daily.
· * Please be patient this first week or so; we will get more efficient with a little practice.
· * All students need to have a bus tag to ride. They will receive these from their teacher on day one. Please keep them on their book bags.
· * Due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes we have to make changes in bus numbers and routes. We ask that you are patient with us. Use the Edulog Parent Portal App to stay up to date. In emergency situations, a call will be sent out. Please check your messages/ email before calling back to the school.
* SBES does not determine bus routes, bus stops, or bus drivers. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these topics, please contact the Swansboro District Transportation Coordinator, Judy O'Donald at 910-326-1436.
* Please know that we work very hard to ensure that our students are safe; however, accidents sometimes happen. Please make sure that you have a plan in place with your child should they ever get off the bus and no one is at home.
* If there is ever an emergency situation and you cannot get through to our main office via phone, please email me ( page.highsmith@onslow.k12.nc.us) and Mrs. Wilsey (elizabeth.wilsey@onslow.k12.nc.us) with your emergency. Although we may be in meetings, we do not leave campus until all bus riders have been delivered.
* Don't forget to communicate with your child's teacher if there are ever changes in transportation routine. Changes must be in writing and I recommend sending the teacher a message to verify that they received the note.

A Note From the Nurse
COMMUNICATION IS CRITICAL!!!
Here are a few tips:
1. The teacher is always the first point of contact. If you cannot resolve an issue after meeting with the teacher, please schedule an appointment to meet with administration.
2. See our data manager (Lori Jones) to sign up for Parent Portal. This gives you up to date info on student attendance and assignments for (3rd-5th grade).
3. Pay attention to the weekly ALL CALL and EMAIL that is sent out every Sunday evening. If you don't want to listen to the message, no worries, the email contains the transcript as well as important links and cute pictures of our students:) If you are not receiving the call and email, please let Lori Jones (lori.jones@onslow.k12.nc.us) know so that we can make sure your info. is up to date. This is the method that we will use to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency, so you need to make sure that you are receiving these calls.
4. Check out our school website: https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/swansboroes
5. Check out our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/swansboroelementaryschool/
6. Remember, for safety reasons, we do not give out student information over the phone and all changes in transportation must be in writing from the parent/legal guardian.
7. If there are custody issues, we must have a copy of the current custody paperwork on file with a judge's signature. If not, both parents have equal access to the student and their educational records.
8. If you have concerns regarding bus routes, stops, schedules and drivers, please direct those concerns to our transportation coordinator Judy O'Donald at 326-1436. SBES does not have direct communication with the buses; therefore, this must go through the transportation dept. Please remember if you would like to stay up to date with bus changes, please download the Edulog Parent Portal App. More info can be found here:https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/Page/1266.
