Principal's Corner
The NAMM Foundation has awarded SLS the 2019 SupportMusic Merit Award, as part of the Best Communities for Music Education program. It is awarded to schools for their commitment to music education. SLS was one of 98 schools in the US and one of four in Indiana to be recognized. Congratulations to Mrs. Pedersen and all of our parents who support music at SLS!
As you know, we had a weather issue prior to spring break right at dismissal. Staff and students (and parents) safely waited out the tornado warning in our basement. After the weather threat had lifted, we moved kids to normal dismissal areas, such as the old gym. Even though the threat had passed, the buses were not yet moving. Some students had to wait up to an hour for their ride home.
During this time a group of fifth and sixth grade students prayed the Rosary for everyone's safety.
Mrs. Brooks who helped supervise students in the old gym commented, “Our kids are rock stars” for how well they behaved during this event.
Mrs. Baxter sent me the following: “Beth and I were also impressed by the 5th graders. They were calm, followed directions, and were perfectly quiet. They sat among the 1st graders and really set a good example and calmed some of the first graders who were worried.”.

Indy Honor Flight
Steven’s grandfather was chosen to go on the Indy Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on April 13th. The 7th and 8th graders wrote letters to him and other veterans on the flight to be read during mail call that day. The Honor Flight allows our veterans to visit war memorials in Washington and honors them for their service to our country.
We are so grateful for our service men and women and their families!

Spring Musical info
The 4th and 5th grade performance is next Tuesday, April 9. The first performance will be the 4th grade recorders at approx. 6:45. Our singing program will start at 7:00.
4th grade students need to arrive between 6:30 and 6:40. Fifth grade needs to be present by 6:45, so we are not interrupting the 4th graders with our arrival. All students will meet their teachers behind the curtain in the Activity Center.
Students should wear dressy clothes - please no jeans or t-shirts. This is a great opportunity to get an extra wear out of a fancy Easter outfit! Please remember that the students tend to get hot while performing, so dress cooler rather than warmer.
Jr. High Musical info.
We are always looking for ways to make the spring musical a better experience for our students and our families. After listening to suggestions, this year we are trying something new with the performances! Students who are not members of the after school cast will only perform one of the two nights.
Students in the Red junior high classes will perform on Thursday, May 9. Students in the White junior high classes will perform on Friday, May 10. If your student is in different classes for different subjects, Mrs. Pedersen will contact you directly to let you know which night they are performing. These groups are how Mrs. Pedersen sees the students.

GOTR needs your help!
Your chance to make a difference.....
The GOTR 5K is coming up on May 11 at Liberty Park and takes 100+ volunteers to make the morning a success. There are many different volunteer opportunities all of which are VERY easy! No experience required. If you have a girl participating and will likely be present anyway, please consider volunteering.
Are you running/walking in the 5K? No problem! There are plenty of jobs you can do that take place before and after the actual 5K! (set up, clean up, parking, face painting, happy hair, door prize)
And if you are NOT running/walking in the 5K, you may help out at the water station, distribute medals, be a course marshal, distribute post race snacks, be a greeter/work finish line!
Please register here by April 30th to volunteer: https://www.raceplanner.com/register/index/65YVWM2RHZKZX1W
