Why Is Breakfast Important?

Research confirms that breakfast is the most important meal of the day for children’s health, academic achievement, cognitive development and mental health. Unfortunately, many children regularly skip breakfast each morning, depriving them of the important benefits associated with the morning meal.

In the school setting, children who struggle with hunger face:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Slower recall
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Diminished academic performance
  • Emotional and behavioral difficulties
  • Issues with aggression and anxiousness
  • Difficulty getting along with other kids
  • Hyperactivity
  • Increased illness, with a longer recovery time, leading to increased absence and tardiness

BA Student Attends Texas Dance Association Conference

On January 6th-9th, Vanessa Mondragon attended the Texas Dance Educator's Association Convention and was accepted into the Texas All State Dance Team! She was the only dancer from Dallas ISD to perform and receive this honor. Vanessa is a senior and is the Captain of the Bryan Adams Belles.

She took dance classes from professional dancers and choreographers that included jazz, contemporary, Bollywood, hip-hop, technique progressions and dance conditioning.

She also performed in front of over 300 dance educators.

Teachers reminded to verify years of service in Oracle

Some TEI effectiveness levels require a minimum number of creditable years of service (CYS). Data recorded in Oracle will be used for this purpose. Teachers who have not submitted official service records from other districts, should submit this information to HCM’s Records Department by March 1, 2016.

Sanger Destination Imagination

Star Thinkers is a Destination Imagination team at Sanger Elementary. The challenge they decided to enter is called The Meme Event where they create a service project for a community. Star Thinkers chose Alex Sanger as their community with a cause to create more respect at the school. The team wrote a platform, created posters, campaign swag, and wrote announcements for the school. The meme they created is STAR... Students Talk About Respect.

Feedback

More ...In the spirit of Jim Knight's words, below is a viable resolution for the second semester. Reflect on where you are, and consider trying this.

Give more feedback than praise - I cannot tell you how many times I have said "Great job!" in my lifetime. Our default reaction is to provide praise. Step back and try to offer some feedback instead. This is easy when students make a lot of errors, but it's harder to do with our students who excel. Offer feedback that will help them move their dial.

Family Volunteers to Help Tornado Victims

Thank you to the Hexter family who volunteered their time to help the tornado victims. You serve as a great role model for your child and for the children at Hexter.

Literacy Cadre

Professional Development for 3-5 grade reading cadre members was on January 4 from 2-5 at the NOLAN ESTES Training Room A. Please ensure that your campuses follow the coaching cycle model as the information is disseminated to teachers and that follow up is done to ensure effective implementation. T

The next round of PD for K-2 reading teachers will be January 19, 20, 21 Please remind teachers who have been in attendance to arrive on time and ready for learning. Thank you to our host sites for accommodating this training.
