Rice Middle School Week of September 12, 2016 in Review

I have enjoyed seeing the many notifications on the RiceMSRavens Twitter account. Thank you to all of you who are taking this step and showcasing what is happening in your classroom at Rice! Keep it up!!!!

Don't forget to join the PTA. They do a lot for the staff and students at Rice and we all need to show appreciation for everything they do. We have 62 staff who have joined, missing 25!

RAVE Tickets and Other Recognition

Respect and Value Everyone (RAVE):

Please continue to use the RAVE ticket system to reward those students who are doing good deeds and making a positive difference at Rice.

Remarkable Ravens:

We are going to be continuing the Remarkable Ravens award this year as well. Sara will be sending information as we get closer to the end of the grading period.

Other Shout Outs:

Kendyl, Sara, and I have discussed recognizing students on a regular basis through a call home when we see a student doing something awesome. I think this is a great way to show our students that we care about even the small things they do and also give their parents something to celebrate. The idea comes from a tweet I saw through my PLN on Twitter (hint, hint). Here is what was posted: #GoodNewsCallOfTheDay

We have called a few parents, with the students in our office, and it was pretty cool to hear the reactions. Definitely something for you to consider and it only takes a few minutes!

Katie Greer Assembly

The Katie Greer Assembly is next Tuesday, September 27 in the morning. We are going to have two assemblies and are going to try our best to get everyone instead of doing a live feed as I suggested last week.

The schedule is posted here.

Students report to class and then will be called to the gym.

The 2nd period assembly will be 2nd period 6th grade PE and all of 7th grade.

The 3rd period assembly will be 3rd period 6th grade PE and all of 8th grade.

We will call the students down when we are ready.

There is also a Katie Greer program here that evening which is geared towards adults. It is a great program and very informative.

Dr. Binggeli Visit

Dr. Binggeli will be visiting Rice sometime tomorrow morning. I imagine he will be coming class to class to say hello.

Tomorrow is spirit day, so we will keep that in place, no need to dress up!

Staff Meeting Thursday

I will send out any information that needs to be shared with the staff instead of sharing it in the meeting. Please read the information below regarding the Flexible Professional Development Hours and also make note of the upcoming Rice dates.

Instead of having the staff meeting, we are going to have an optional professional development meeting which will go towards the campus hours.

Professional Development

Professional Development This Week:

Piktochart and LucidPress Training - Lab 907

I have talked to some staff members and there are a couple who are a bit confused as to the requirements for the Flexible Learning. First, I suggest that you read over the information I sent out previously:

  1. Flexible Professional Development Hours 2016-2017
  2. Flexible Professional Development Hours FAQ

We created the professional the Professional Development Calendar as a way to offer various campus professional development that meet the needs of the campus. We chose not to have a limited number of days so that it is more flexible to you. If you have some ideas for professional development, please see Kendyl, Sara, or me for approval and then you can add it to the calendar.

The 15 hours (7.5 campus/7.5 personal) are not optional, they must be completed. You don't get to take a personal day in lieu of completing the requirements.

If you have any questions, please come see one of us for further explanation.

Thank you for all of you who have submitted an application for a badge. This program is not intended to collect badges, but really to encourage you to look at the technology that is available to use in the classroom and integrate it into your lessons. There are a ton of opportunities out there and I encourage you all to take a step out of your comfort zone!

Career Day - November 4

Maggie is looking for volunteers to come out and speak at Career Day. Please contact her if you have someone in mind and for more information.

Rice Middle School Community Outreach - Ravens Take Flight

Thanks to those of you who came to the meeting last Wednesday to discuss ideas on how we can move forward with giving back to the community. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:45 in my office.

We are also accepting other butters such as soy, sun and almond, but please make sure these are in plastic jars.

For the month of September, Rice Middle School will be taking part in the 3rd Annual Food 4 Kids - Plano Peanut Butter Drive.

We are asking for donations of regular sized plastic jars of peanut butter. There are boxes in the front rotunda and our goal for the month is a donation total of 600 jars.

Thanks for spreading the word. For more information on the drive, please visit the school website here.

SBIC Goals
