Traffic
If you’ve driven to ACMA in the morning, you’ve probably seen that traffic in front of school at drop off is a challenge. This is especially the case in the first week or so of school, when more parents need to come into the office than usual, causing cars to park rather than pause in front of the building. Even on our better days, however, the sheer number of cars moving through the driveway is significant and delays are very real. It’s one of the challenges of a school designed for elementary students in the late 1940s, and one that we have for this one more year before new construction helps to provide some ease to the traffic flow out front.
As we navigate this year, and particularly these opening days, I’d ask that we do our best to drop off and then continue out of the parking lot in front. We begin classes at 7:30, but students have the opportunity to come inside earlier than that; they can go to the cafeteria as early as 6:45, and we open the school near 7:00. For some, coming a few minutes early can help avoid the worst of the traffic.
Some have asked about using the Back Lot for drop off and pick up, and the reason we can’t do this is simply the volume of buses we see every morning and the safety concern of students walking across the parking lot. We are a “bus hub” at ACMA, which means every morning at least 14 buses drop students off at ACMA and 7 buses stay to take students to other schools.
Our East Lot is home to much student parking, and this can complicate the traffic flow as well. As a dead end, this lot presents challenges for any use other than students parking and coming in to school.
This leaves our front drive, imperfect as it currently is, as the main artery for parents dropping off students. I was asked recently what could be done to improve this, and fortunately the construction that will begin next July can provide an answer. When campus reopens in the fall of 2021 the front driveway will be widened and a small parking lot added. This will increase both the flow of traffic and the room some need to park and enter the school. It won’t be perfect, no parking scheme I’ve ever seen at a school is, but it should help us in the long term to keep students safe and parents less frustrated with the traffic that comes with students all arriving to school at once.
Until then I hope that all of us can slow down, choose to be respectful to one another, and do our best to keep traffic moving during drop off and pick up. I wish I could make the changes to the front driveway today, but until we can, I will apologize for any frustration, work to provide clarity, and believe that working together we can make the best it can be right now.
Thank you for your help,
Bjorn
