Guided Reading

Your child is on an exciting journey of literacy exploration and learning this year. This journey will lead to increased learning through reading, writing, listening, and speaking across every part of the school day.

Over the course of the year, your child will read, think about, and write about a lot of different books for a variety of purposes. Some books will be read aloud to the class. The class will read other books and poems together as a shared experience. Children will read books in a small group in which the teacher can provide individualized instruction. Children will also have the opportunity to choose books based on their interests and read those books independently. Your child may respond to these different books through talking or writing.

Your child will experience books at a variety of reading levels. Some books will be above where your child typically reads. These will be read by the teacher or as a class. Your child will read books that are slightly challenging but with the teacher's support and instruction. These books will increase your child's ability to read. Your child will read independent books that are easy, just right, or even somewhat challenging. The important thing is for your child to experience many books throughout the day. All reading will contribute to the growth your child will experience this year.

Your child will experience word work, interactive read-alouds, daily mini-lessons, and small group instruction as part of his or her reading block.

Elementary yearbooks are on sale now through October 30. Books are $20 but you can save $5 if you order online at

Stay Connected and Informed

Report cards and NWEA reports will be sent home with students on Thursday, October 22.

Your child's teachers will reach out to you with concerns and celebrations as they arise. Each quarter, midterms are provided in grades 3-5. Be reminded that grades 2-5 can view student grades in PowerSchool at any time.

I encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher when questions or concerns arise. If you have not signed up for your child's Remind classroom, you will want to do so. This is an easy way to stay in contact throughout the year. Please let the classroom teacher know if you need information to join the Remind classroom.
