Jesse D. Scott News
October 30, 2020
Dear Families,
We have made it through October! The weather is changing and daylight savings is coming to a close. It is time to set back our clocks an hour before going to bed on October 31, 2020. Time is often a struggle for students during distance learning. You can help your child be on time to class by keeping a clock or timer close by so they know when to log on. Many of our students attempt to log into their classes early in the morning and are not permitted access. This is a safety measure teachers added to the Google Meet link to prevent students from hanging out unsupervised. If this occurs, be patient. The teacher will be on shortly. Try again in a couple of minutes. When the teacher logs in, students will receive access.
This school year has brought its challenges and celebrations as we learn to navigate our way through distance learning. We appreciate the feedback we have received. It has helped us make the necessary adjustments to help our staff and students be successful in this virtual environment. As issues arise, we will strive to do our best to improve our practices. Thank you for your continued support and patience.
Sincerely,
Deborah Faltinosky
Grade Level News
Kindergarten
The kindergarten classes are busy learning their letters and sounds. They learn a few letters each week. The letters they should know are n, a, p, m, s, t, o, d, e, h, f, and g. As they learn the letters, they are also learning to decode and blend words using those letter sounds. They are given decodable books to practice these skills. Please continue to practice these letters and read the decodable books your child's teacher provided to reinforce their learning. In math, the kindergarteners are learning their numbers 0-5 and learning to compose and decompose the numbers. You can help support your child's understanding by having them count objects and have them break those objects into groups. For example, I have five cars. I can separate the 5 cars into 4 cars and 1 car or 2 cars and 3 cars, etc.
First Grade
In first grade, our students are learning how to identify the central message of a text and pick out key details. You can support your child's learning by reading each day and talking with them about what they read about and the information they found in the text and illustrations. The students have been working on informational writing. They are learning to develop a solid paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion. First grade just completed a module on adding and subtracting through 10. Please continue to practice math facts with your child for fluency.
Second Grade
Our second grade students have been reading a variety of nonfiction texts. They are identifying different text features and the main idea and details in the text. They have been writing opinion pieces using support to back up their stance on a topic. They are writing narratives focusing on ensuring they have a beginning, middle, and end. In math, they have been learned about place value to the hundreds place. They will continue to work on addition and subtraction within 100. In social studies, they finished a unit on diverse leaders, and they are beginning a Native American studies unit that will conclude with a research project. In science, they are completing a unit on the life cycle of a plant.
Third Grade
Third grade has been working on identifying character traits, asking and answering questions about what they have read, and identifying the main idea and supporting details. Students need to read daily and ask themselves questions about what they read. Our third grade students just finished a unit on narrative writing and are moving into an informational writing unit. They are finishing multiplication and division and are moving into the module on area and perimeter. Please help your child practice multiplication facts for fluency.
Fourth Grade
Our fourth grade students will continue to learn about Nevada history for social studies. In science, they are beginning a unit on the six major body systems and how they work together. In reading, they are learning to identify key details to determine the main idea of the text and the author's purpose to summarize what they have read. To reinforce these skills, students should read daily. In math, they are adding and subtracting within a million using the algorithm and place value chart. Students need to practice math facts daily for fluency.
Fifth Grade
Our fifth grade students have been researching indigenous tribes around the world to learn about how their customs and traditions have evolved over time. In science, they have been comparing and contrasting the digestive systems of living things. They have been working on opinion writing using evidence to support their opinion. In math, our fifth graders just completed a module on adding and subtracting decimals and are moving into a module on fractions. In reading, they are learning how to identify the theme and how to draw inferences from a text. They are working on citing evidence from the text to justify reasoning. Please continue to have your child read daily to increase their fluency and comprehension.
