Amity Elementary - Home of the Groundhogs

March 2020

From the Desk of Mrs. Uhlorn

Welcome to Spring Amity Families!

Only three more weeks and the 3rd quarter will be behind us. Report cards will be coming home on Friday, March 20th. I highly encourage you to check infinite campus with your child to see if there are any missing assignments or assessments. If they have anything missing, please work with your child’s teacher to arrange a redo session.

As spring time approaches and weather becomes increasingly better, our students sometimes forget our expectations at Amity. A gentle reminder on some common issues I address in my office.

Students are not allowed to bring toys from home. This is to prevent toys from being lost or damaged. We have plenty of toys for our students to play with and are always willing to take suggestions on additions for our playground. If your student earns an opportunity to bring something from home, it needs to be arranged with the classroom teacher and the item must stay in the classroom for the day.

When students are logged into their Google Accounts For Education (GAFE) under the Boise School District server, we have systems in place that will flag their account if inappropriate searches are conducted. Some notifications I have received this year include self-harm, adult content, and threatening searches. If I receive a notification, I will talk with the student and review the board policy for student technology use. Parents/guardians will be notified via phone call and email. Included in the email will be the notification I receive. If you have questions about the expectations for GAFE use, please do not hesitate to email me or consult our board policy.

Once Kindergarten Registration is complete for the 2020-2021 school year, we will submit our projected enrollment numbers to the area directors. They will review our numbers, make staffing decisions and inform me on which open enrollment applications I can accept. If I have to deny continuing open enrollment, I will call you directly and talk to you about the appeals process. Again, if you have questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask. However, I might not have answers until after March 13th. Thank you for your patience; I know it is not easy.

Next month I will send out the class placement input form. Please take a moment to fill this out. It is one piece to our process when placing students in classrooms next year. Our teachers spend two hours making recommendations for placements, we are very thoughtful about learning style, friendships, and emotional needs. If you have information our team needs to know, this is your time to give us this valuable input.

If your child is sick, please keep them home until they are feeling better, are fever free for 24 hours without medication, or the doctor has cleared them. We are taking extra precautions as respiratory viruses are running rampant. We are also following all CDC guidelines when it comes to the coronavirus-19. If you have questions about what we are doing, do not hesitate to reach out.

Again, thank you for your continued support and understanding as I was out of the building for a week and a half in February focusing on my health. I am almost back to 100 percent and am hopeful I will only get better. I missed the students and the daily routines at Amity. Have an amazing March.

Kindergarten Registration 2020-2021

Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-2021 school year will be held at Amity on Thursday, March 5th, for those that live in Amity's boundaries. In order to register for kindergarten, your child must turn five by September 1st, 2020.

A few key points to remember:

Amity's registration starts at 4:00 and ends at 6:00. If you arrive before 4:00, please line up outside the front entrance in the designated location. You may arrive anytime during our registration session.

If you have filled out the registration paperwork online, you and your child must still attend registration so that your child can be screened. If you applied online but received an email from the school noting that you are missing paperwork, you can either bring that in anytime before March 5th or during registration.

Packets are available in the office. Filling out the paperwork early will save you time on March 5th. You will need to bring your child's birth certificate, immunizations and proof of residency.

We have put together a Kindergarten Registration newsletter with all of the details, links and forms. Click here to view the newsletter.

If you know of new families in your neighborhood with a kindergarten student, please forward this information on to them.

Bingo Night

We wanted to send out a great big THANK YOU to all of our families who supported our Amity Bingo Night! The Amity community really showed up; just ask the people sitting on the floor! We appreciate your patience, your understanding, and your amazing support of one of our most fun events at Amity. We hope your bellies were full of cotton candy and your hands full of prizes! We ran out of both!!! The silent auction baskets were coordinated by the 6th graders this year, all in an effort to fund their day trip to Horsethief Reservoir in Donnelly...a day specially designated for 6th graders only. Through the silent auction baskets and their read-a-thon, they were able to meet their goal and will be able to take this final right of passage field trip! The remainder of the funds will be added to the Classroom Project fund where teachers can continue to purchase items to improve their classroom and our children’s learning. Again, we can’t thank you enough for your support of Bingo! Go Groundhogs!

From the PTA

Our next meeting is scheduled for March 11th at 4 p.m. in the library. It will also be available to watch on Facebook Live under Amity PTA.

Save the date for Amity's Family Fun Night! It will be held the evening of May 14th. More information will be sent home in April.

We are in need of PTA officers!

Listed below are the officers and their duties on our board. We work collectively as a whole and have an amazing volunteer pool to help back us! It doesn’t have to be one person; two people can share a position.

President : Run meetings (4 time a year), coordinate Fall fundraiser,

help coordinate teacher appreciation

Vice President: Coordinate Spring fundraiser, help coordinate teacher appreciation

Secretary: Keep notes at meetings, coordinate PTA membership drive, help coordinate

teacher appreciation

Treasurer: Coordinate financials for PTA, help coordinate teacher appreciation

Volunteer Coordinator: Set up volunteer assignments, help coordinate teacher appreciation

Boys Basketball Team Takes Second Place

Our three boys basketball teams had a very successful season. Some played for the first time and some have been playing for years...but all of them learned new skills and how to be amazing team members.

Our tournament team played five very intense games and ended the season with a second place finish in the championship game. Even more impressive than their basketball skills was watching their sportsmanship on the floor as they helped the other team up when they fell and cheered for good plays by the opposing team.

Great job, Groundhogs!

March to End Hunger

Amity Elementary is partnering with the Boise Rescue Mission and their "March to End Hunger" food drive. This is a great opportunity for our Groundhogs to collect cans of food and other non-perishable items to help meet the needs of people right here in our community.

The March to End Hunger event will start on Monday, March 2nd and continue through Tuesday, March 31st. Our school goal is to receive enough donations to fill the pyramid in the office window (see photo below). We look forward to watching the pyramid grow!

Thank you for your generosity!
