Illinois Report Cards
Illinois Report Cards were released on October 31, 2019. You can view the District Report Card at

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) wants to know what educators, parents, and other stakeholders think about state assessments. ISBE launched a survey today to gather feedback on state and federally required student assessments – from the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey administered at the beginning of kindergarten to the SAT administered at the end of 11th grade.
The feedback will help ISBE prioritize short-term improvements and long-term enhancements to the state assessment system. ISBE has identified equity, inclusivity, usefulness, and balance as the central values defining its vision for state assessments.
The survey is available now at www.isbe.net/assessmentfeedback. An independent consultant is conducting the survey to ensure confidentiality. All survey responses will be de-identified before they are shared with ISBE. Survey responses are due by Dec. 6.

The Third Grade Team & Students
Attendance Information- Late to School and Tardies
There has been some confusion in looking at attendance information. The Infinite Campus system records absences and partial absences based on incidents and minutes, and tardies.
The difference between “tardy” and “late to school.” in Infinite Campus
Students in PK thru grade 5 should have very few tardies. A tardy is recorded when a student is signed in prior to the start of the school day, but doesn’t make it to class by the start of the school day. For example, Susie signs in at the office at 8:34, but actually gets to her 1st period class at 8:36. She would be considered in school on time, but tardy to class. Students in grades 6-8 can record a tardy throughout the school day when they don’t get to any class on time. These will show on the attendance record as a tardy.
“Late to school” is when a student signs in at the office AFTER the start of their school day. For example, Susie signs in at 8:45 because she overslept. She is considered late to school and the system records the minutes she was considered absent. This will show on the attendance record as an unexcused absence incident.
Infinite Campus records the number of incidents and class/period minutes for attendance purposes. Students in PK-K have 1 period for their day. Extended day kindergarten and grade 1-5 have an AM period and a PM period for their day. Junior high students have individual class periods for their day. Lunch, recess and junior high passing periods are not considered part of the academic day.
Tell Us How We Are Doing Via the 5 Essentials Survey
Principal's Page
Dear MG Parents & Caregivers,
It was amazing to see such a great turn out of families at Family Reading Night & conferences in November! I am so impressed by how invested you are in your children's success and grateful for your partnership. The faculty and staff of Milne Grove School is proud that you have entrusted us with your most precious gifts! We ask that you take time to complete the 5 Essentials Survey in order to provide us essential feedback to make our school a better place! A link can be found above this "article". Thank you in advance for your help.
December is full of activity & celebration; please see the calendar for details on all of the happenings! The annual holiday program is back at KG this year. Please join us on Tuesday, December 17th at 10am and/or 1:15pm for the performance of "Holiday Road Trip" featuring students in grades K-5 and the KG Choir. PM Kindergarten and Early Learners will have their classroom parties during the afternoon of December 19th and all other classrooms will celebrate on the morning of the 20th.
Winter Notes:
If your family is impacted by illness this winter, we would like to remind you to call the district attendance line to report absences by 9am. If you would like to request homework, you should do so in that message and indicate whether you will pick it up or wish for it to be sent home with another student.
Since it has been quite cold the past few weeks, I would like to remind caregivers that students line up and have recess outside as long as it is 20 degrees or over. We would like to see children wearing heavy coats, hats, and gloves each day in order to stay warm. If your child does not have winter gear, please contact our office and we will make sure warm gear is provided.
In case of emergency closings, there are lots of ways to get the information. The district will send out a call, email, and text. In addition, our website, WJOL, and the Emergency Closing Center will be updated.
School will be out for winter break from Saturday, December 21st through Monday, January 6th. Students return to class on Tuesday, January 7th. This holiday season, I wish your family peace, love and happiness.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Koziol
Notes From the Nurse
I have a few reminders to pass along to assist you in the up-coming months.
1. Current Second grade students are required by the State of Illinois to have a
dental exam form completed and turned in by May 15, 2020. Many of the students have completed the dental requirement but there are still a few students not in compliance with this law. According to the law, report cards can be withheld if the dental form is not on file.
2. Many children have been coming to the Health Office for coughs, chapped lips, dry skin, headaches, etc. We are not able to provide Tylenol / Motrin, cough drops etc. without authorization and you must supply the needed item. If you feel your child will need one or more of these items, please complete a yellow medication release form and return it to school with the item to be given to your child. These items will be kept in the Health Office for administration as needed.
3. If your child has a cold with a frequent cough or congestion or requires medication for symptoms, please keep them home until they are able to be at school comfortably and without the aid of medication.
4. If your child has a rash, sore throat, pink eyes, discharge from the eyes, please keep your child home. It is recommended that you visit a health professional to determine if the condition is contagious. Children with suspected pink eye or strep will be sent home. A note is required from the doctor in order to return to school.
5. Children with fevers may not return to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol or Motrin.
6. Children diagnosed with pink eye (conjunctivitis) must be on antibiotic drops for 24 hours before returning to school. A doctor’s note is required.
7. Children who have vomiting or diarrhea may not return to school until 24 hours after the last episode.
8. When calling in a child's absence from school, please give the reason for the absence, such as a cold, flu, vomiting, headache etc. this helps the health office keep on top of illness trends, gives us a heads up when the child returns to school and provides information required by the Will County Health Department.
Please remind your child to wash their hands and use good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. Please feel free to call or stop by the Health Office if you have any questions or concerns about your child or any of the above information.
Mrs. Gilkerson, RN
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 815-838-0542 ex. 2106 or at sgilkerson@d91.net.

Reading/ELA
Students will be concentrating on the phonics/spelling patterns of endings of -ing and -ed on short vowel words. Students will be learning how to double the consonant before adding the -ing ending. We will also be working on discriminating between long and short vowel words.
We will be focusing on comprehension topics such as cause and effect, drawing conclusions and identifying character attributes.
In writing, we will be working on creating opinion pieces. This is a good way for students to express their own points of view. We will also begin learning about what narrative writing looks like and sounds like.

Please be sure to visit the Superkids Online Fun at home to have your child practice their phonetic patterns and to increase their fluency with stories we’ve already read.

December/January will be full of connecting addition and subtraction to see how they are related. This will include creating fact families and working on fact fluency through 20.
We will begin counting by 10s and learning about tens and ones.

Relationship Roundup with Mrs. Reynolds
This month’s topic: Actions Speak Louder than Words
The relationships you build with your children are vastly important to your ability to be an effective parent. All of the effort you put into your relationship with your child will be worth it!
In this newsletter, we have already talked about helping your children label and manage their feelings and how important it is that your children feel listened to. This month, think of characteristics you’d like your children to develop. These may include honesty, kindness, self control, and being unselfish. This mental list is not only a list of traits you want your child to develop, but a list of traits that need to be modeled to your child.
Modeling is teaching. Parents are a child’s first teacher and their lifelong teacher. We learned from our parents modeling behaviors to us. Most of us remember very clearly how our parents acted toward us and what kind of people they were when we were young. We saw how they handled problems and emotions.
Whether you are aware of it or not, every moment that you are with your child, you are modeling behaviors. In every good time and bad time, your children are watching you. The behavior our children see affects them on a daily basis as children tend to imitate behaviors. Also, the behavior we model for our children over a long period of time eventually becomes a part of our children’s regular behavior.
If your child is displaying behaviors that concern you, make sure you are not displaying those behaviors in your life. Now, it’s not that parents’ behavior is 100% responsible for the child’s behavior. Lots of factors play into that, including the child’s age, temperament, and under-developed skills. However, parents’ behavior contributes quite a lot to children’s behavior. So if you tend to shout when you are angry, don’t be surprised when your child shouts or throws a tantrum when he/she is angry.
As parents we need to keep our behaviors and our emotions in check. Please be aware that around the holidays, many people experience an increased intensity to their emotions. So pay attention to expressing your emotions in a healthy way. Practice being calm when you are already calm. Then when the hustle and bustle of a stressful day comes along, you can use your strategy to stay calm and model kindness and self-control.
Changing behavior can be difficult and it doesn’t happen overnight (for us or our kids). Just be aware of your emotions, attempt to model healthy behavior, and you are on the right track!

Art
All kindergarten through third grade students will be constructing a personal ceramic Christmas ornament to share with their families throughout the month of December. Each grade level will have a different theme; however, each and every one will be sure to shine and sparkle on the tree. As we move into January, we will focus on color, the color wheel, basic color blending and color relationships. Each grade level will complete several paintings with different artist inspirations, painting techniques, and color schemes. Be sure to ask your child about their masterpiece – you will be amazed at what you discover! Be sure to also notice your child’s artist statement and project description on the backside of their work. Each grade level is encouraged to vocalize something memorable about their work or the experience. We have so much fun in art – it is easy to talk about it!
Thank you for your support and interest in the art department at Milne Grove School. If you would like additional information, please be sure to view the Art Page on the district website for more art news and basic information about your child’s art education at Milne Grove.
