We've Got Skillz
Skills Portfolio Exam Review 2016
Essential Question
Are you ready for English III?
The Task
Each page of your digital portfolio will teach an assigned skill we have worked to master this year. Each group member will be given a different responsibility within the page: One group member will define and explain a concept, one group member will create examples to embed on the page using a variety of media, and one group member will create a challenge which will enable the audience to demonstrate their mastery of each skill.
You should craft your portfolio pages in such a way that it can be a learning tool for next year’s sophomores!
Project Introduction and Day 1 Instructions
The Skillz
Group Planning
You will fill this out, take a picture of your planning sheet (each group member will show their copy of the picture to their teacher), then submit the sheet to the teacher.
In the left column, you should identify two pieces of information. In the blanks, write out the specific skill that is listed on the card you drew. Then, highlight the category the skill falls under. For example, you may write in “Effective Transitions and Organizational Structure” in the blank space and then highlight “Writing” as this is a writing skill. This will help ensure that you target your work toward the appropriate category as some of the skills appear in two categories. If you do the work based on the incorrect category, your grade will likely suffer.
Next, write the name of the group member who will define each skill (you will each define one skill), provide examples of the skill (you will each provide examples for one skill), and who will create a learner challenge (you will each create a learner challenge for one skill).

Day 1
- Questions to address:
- What is it?
- When do you use/do it?
- How do you use/do it?
- Why do you use/do it?
Day 2 Instructions
Day 2: Refine Definitions & Create/Curate Original Examples
- View the definition/explanation of all group members. Group members will critique each others work (discuss positive aspects and areas to address). Individuals will then refine part 1 of the project.
- Group members will individually create examples and embed them into the class Google site.
- Areas to address:
- If the skill is used in multiple genres (for example a thesis statement is different in literary analysis, persuasive writing, and argument analysis), you should provide examples of the different types.
- You must provide 3-4 original examples in order to be eligible for full points.
- You may NOT repeat digital media (If you made a Prezi yesterday, you can't make another Prezi. If your group member made a Prezi for the definition/explanation portion of the skill for which you are providing examples, you can't make a Prezi with the examples for that same skill).
Day 3 Instructions
Day 3: Create and Curate Original Examples
- Continue creating and embedding your original examples into the class Google site.
- This step must be complete by the beginning of class tomorrow.
Day 4 Instructions
Day 4: Refine Examples & Create a Learner Challenge
- We will begin class with your group members opening your examples and reviewing the information in order check each others work to ensure you covered all information necessary for understanding the skill through examples.
- Refine your individual work before the end of class. This portion of the project will be graded after class today. Again, if your work is not on the class Google site, tough toenails. Be sure not to make this mistake.
- Keep in mind that asking your learner to define key words for the learner challenge will NOT receive anywhere close to Advanced on the rubric. Think about the ways you have demonstrated your learning in this class: You have CREATED things that demonstrate your mastery of each skill. Think back to all the things we've done for ideas, then come up with something NEW and engaging to your audience.
Day 5 Instructions
Day 5: Create a Learner Challenge
- Keep in mind that asking your learner to define key words for the learner challenge will NOT receive anywhere close to Advanced on the rubric. Think about the ways you have demonstrated your learning in this class: You have CREATED things that demonstrate your mastery of each skill. Think back to all the things we've done for ideas, then come up with something NEW and engaging to your audience.
- Tomorrow morning the final portion of the project will be graded. Once again, if your work is not on the class Google site, tough toenails. Be sure not to make this mistake.
