Bradley Broadcast December 2017
"One and Only You"
Dates to Remember
Counselor's Corner
Hello Amazing Parents!
The 2017 is almost over, and we have had such an amazing first semester of school! I am beyond proud of our Bradley Bears for working so hard in their classes and maintaining healthy friendships! We also had an excellent celebration of Generation Texas Week! Thank you parents for having your child participate in this wonderful event. It was very enlightening to listen to your child's career goals and watch them explore the different career clusters. It is important to our schools that our students understand the importance of making career choices and the impact of their education here at Bradley. This month our character focus is "RESPECT." We want to make sure that all of our Bradley Bears understand three important Bradley Bear Essentials:
- We respect ourselves
- We respect others
- We respect our surroundings
During this holiday season, our staff is truly dedicated in helping your child achieve this character trait with many frequent reminders, games, and activities.
Notes From the Nurse
Get Your Flu Shot!!!!
Per the CDC:
Each year thousands of people in the United States die from flu, and many more are hospitalized.
The flu vaccine can:
· keep you from getting flu,
· make the flu less severe if you do get it
· keep you from spreading flu to your family and other people

Library
Help us Save our Books - DONATE 2 gallon baggies to your child's teacher!
Our library is beautiful and full of amazing brand new books. Students love selecting books during their library visits. Sadly, there have been many books returned to us with extensive water damage. These damaged books must be discarded. Fees will be charged for all wet books. You can help protect our books by purchasing a box of 2 gallon baggies for your child's classroom. Student books stored in 2 gallon baggies have a better chance of staying dry in the classroom and in backpacks!
Thank you,
Melissa Rock, Librarian

Computer
This month we are practicing typing and searching on the Internet. Typing.com is a great website we have been using. If the kids complete a section at home, send an email or a note to me, I will award them a tally mark. If they complete all tasks at the beginner level they will earn a prize. We are also working on safe searches and key words using a safe search site called Kiddle.co. It is run by Google and is made for kids! Kiddle.co is a great search engine to use at home for any and all kid friendly Internet searches! 2nd through 4th grade have been learning about all the amazing things we can do in Google Drive and how to incorporate what we have learned into making a project. The kids have been working very hard, and it shows!

Art
In Mrs. Gutierrez Art class the students are:
Kinder/1st grade: will learn about the color wheel and will stamp different types of leaves using those colors.
2nd grade: will identify shapes and patterns in buildings and recognize their aesthetic purposes in architecture.
3rd grade: will draw a dessert integrating elements of art inspired about the famous artist Wayne Thiebaud.
4th grade: will learn about self-portraits and will draw one. They will also learn about the renowned artist, Paul Klee, and they will imitate Klee's style.
In Mrs. McElroy's class the students are:
Kindergarten and First grades are almost finished with their superhero self portraits! They have been such responsible artists working with the sharpies and watercolors. Next we will move onto our still-life study of desert plants. We will continue to use watercolors but add the medium oil pastels. This will be their Western Art in consideration for the rodeo.
2nd, 3rd and 4th are so close to finishing their Symbols of Texas artwork! I am very impressed at how our students have been working hard and making choices about their art! We are learning how to critique our own artwork as well as our classmates' art. We look at the art and find something positive, something to improve upon and then express how we can improve upon the artwork. When the students finish they will continue their value study by completing the levels of Blendoku on the ipad and creating their own value scales.
Music
The Bradley Honor Choir performed a beautiful Veteran's Day Concert on November 7th. Thank you to all the veterans who were able to attend. Our next performance for parents will be Tuesday, December 19 at 6:00 p.m.
Kindergarten has been exploring their high and low voices with the chant, "These are Grandma's Glasses." First grade students learned a sign language song called "Thank You." Ask your child to sing for you!
I am so proud of our Second grade students! They gave a wonderful performance of Where the Wild Things Are. It was fun to get to show off all they have learned this fall!
Third and fourth grade students spent time working in small groups at different music stations. They practiced decoding, creating, and performing rhythms using rhythm sticks, boomwhackers, and even flyswatters.
P.E.
WOW! December is here and we are bouncing and shooting from happiness!
In PE, our basketball unit will teach our students the basic, but most important skills to develop into great players. Along with basketball, the students will enjoy our Winter Holiday Games Unit while still learning more about making healthy choices. 5210 is part of their daily routine now and we have seen proof of the positive impact in our students. Big Thanks to our parents for making sure our students are wearing safe shoes during PE class! We wish you a safe and happy holiday vacation, see you next year!
P.S.: Fit Fred is back at Coach Orlando's home and he is ready to learn more about 5210, follow him with twitter at https://twitter.com/jessy_orlando

Happy December from your favorite Kinders!
Can you believe it is already December?! We are so excited to be ending 2017 researching Holidays Around the World. We will “visit” Italy, Australia, England, Israel, and several other countries to familiarize ourselves with various holiday traditions and symbols. (Did you know that La Befana is a friendly holiday witch in Italian culture? We didn’t either!) We are also working very hard on our 2nd 9 weeks testing. Our teachers are asking us to count to 100, recognize sight words, write sentences, and now even READ ON OUR OWN! A huge thank you for all of your support with the Reading Folders at home. We know your children love to show off their new reading skills to you! We are so proud of your Bradley Bear Cubs! We will celebrate with our Holiday Party on 12/19. Your child’s teacher will send more information soon! Have a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year!

First grade
Our first graders are working hard and becoming better readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and citizens every day. We are so proud of our students’ growth as we near the end of the first semester.
We have a lot of exciting things going on in the month of December!
In Reading, we will continue to grow our comprehension and critical thinking skills. We are currently learning about media literacy. Students will identify different forms of media along with different techniques used in media. Our Word Study focus this month will be digraphs (th, ch, sh, ph, wh, ck, kn, & wr). In Writing, we are learning how to write a friendly letter.
Our focus in Math will be skip-counting, numeration, and place value. Students will be able to skip-count by twos, fives, and tens up to 120. We will also focus on number sense and look at number relationships using a 120 chart.
First grade scientists will learn about weather this month. We will also review characteristics of day and night and learn more about the sun and moon.
In Social Studies, we are learning about needs and wants. We will also be learning about winter holidays. Our holiday unit will conclude with the students “traveling” around the world to other countries to experience different holiday traditions. We are getting our passports ready!
We are looking forward to a fun-filled month!

second grade
It is hard to believe that it is December and the holidays are right around the corner! We look forward to sharing the season with your child as we have lots of excitement this month. In addition to our academic growth, we will focus on showing daily acts of kindness to others so that your child's generosity will continue to make Bradley a welcoming place to be.
In language arts, we are learning about traditional literature as we read folktales to determine the moral of the story. During writer's workshop, we will learn about fact/opinion writing and write persuasive letters.
In math, we are beginning a unit on measurement. This will be a hands-on unit where we will explore length using concrete models and rulers. We will also learn how to tell time to the minute using a digital and analog clock. Problem solving and graphing will be incorporated throughout the unit and we will still reinforce addition and subtraction skills.
During science, we will participate in labs to learn about magnetism and how magnets are used in the real world. Then we will explore manmade and natural resources.
In social studies, we will learn about various customs, cultures, holidays and celebrations.
We wish you and your families a joyful holiday season!
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Teachers
third grade
This month in Math we are continuing our multiplication and division unit. We have been exploring multiplication and division representations through creating arrays, making equal groups, repeated addition, area models, strip diagrams and much more. Our third graders are thriving with their multiplication facts, and we continue to add a new factor each week. We ask that you have your student continue working nightly on their facts. So far, we have learned our 0's, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s and this month we will add 6’s and 9’s.
In science, we will explore the Sun’s role in the water cycle and how the Sun, Earth, Moon and planets work together in our Solar System.
In social studies we will be delving into ethnic and cultural celebrations of the local community and other communities. The students will have the opportunity to experience several culture traditions through a day of Holidays Around the World.
In reading, we are finishing our Traditional Literature unit. In this unit, we read myths, folktales, legends, and fairytales. We will be moving into Drama where we will discuss the structure and elements of theater. We will continue practicing reading skills in this unit, such as character interaction, sequencing and summarizing main events, and comprehending text.
In writing, we will begin imaginative stories! Each student will be adapting a fairytale that we have read in class. When adapting the fairytale, the student will understand how a change to a setting will change other elements of the story, such as clothing, character personalities, and cultural representations. These changes can also influence the problem and solution in the story. We are looking forward to another fun month with our students!
fourth grade
What a great few weeks we have had with our Fourth Grade Bears and we look forward to what is to come.
In reading, we will begin studying traditional literature. We will expose our readers to all sort of fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and legends. We will work to strengthen our skills with inferencing, summary, and compare and contrasting of literary elements. It important that you are continuing to spend time nightly reading with your child to help strengthen their comprehension and fluency.
During writer’s workshop, we will begin a new unit of study where will be exploring writing poetry. Your poets will delve into poetry head first and will be spending three weeks crafting their writing. We are excited to give our fourth graders a chance to be creative and express themselves through writing poems.
In math, we will begin our geometry unit. Students will be introduced to types of lines, angles, triangles, as well as how to use a protractor to measure angles.
During science, we will continue finishing experimenting with circuits. We will then move into the water cycle and weather patterns. We hope to get into the science lab again real soon!
In social studies, we will continue to understand the causes and effects of European exploration of Texas in North America and begin to study the beginning of the Texas Revolution.
During the month of December we will be doing so many enjoyable things. We will be having a holiday party, as well as a Polar Express Day, so be on the lookout for more information with specifics that will be coming home!
Sincerely,
The Fourth Grade Teachers
