The history of Rwanda
There are three main ethnic groups, T he Hutus, the Tutsis, and the Twa/Pygmies. The have been hunter/gatherers since 500 B.C.E. They began farming over 2000 years ago. In 1895, Germany took over Rwanda and in 1923 Belgium took over Rwanda. When they were a colony of the two european countries there wee strong ethnic tensions. They became independent in 1962, the strong ethnic tensions stayed the same.
They were called ¨Land of Thousand Hills¨ because of their mountainous terrain. Rwanda is slightly smaller than Maryland. Kigali is the capital of Rwanda. About 700 of the remaining mountain gorillas live in Rwanda
