Mariner Update Parent Edition
Volume 12 Issue 27
Message to families
Mariner Family,
Every parent wants their child to be successful. Every parent wants to give their child the best things in life. Reading is the key to your child’s success. Reading is the key to giving them all that you want to give to them. Reading is the foundation for your child’s learning and learning is the life-long process that will give your child the opportunity to succeed, to struggle well in life, to have so much hope in life, to dream and believe with confidence that they will be able to pursue their goals in life, that they have the ability, that they are a strong reader and can learn any new information that crosses their path.. If you want your child to win, then give them the tools to win. Give them your time to win. There is no substitute for time. If you read consistently with your child, you will be giving them a chance to succeed in life.
You can send your child to school each day and that is an awesome gift to give. You can increase the value of the gift to your child when you spend time reading with them. Some of you are already reading with your children on a consistent basis. Keep that going and if you haven’t started a reading time in your home, or a regular trip to the public library to receive free books on a regular basis, I am providing the address and schedule to the public library in Perris.
The Perris Branch Library is located at 163 E. San Jacinto Avenue, Perris, Ca. 92570. They have a Family Night every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., for all ages. The event takes place in their community room . Join in on songs, crafts and stories. All ages welcome. Here is their schedule:
Sunday 1:00-5:00 p.m.
Monday 10:00 -6:00 p.m.
Tuesday 12:00.-8:00 p.m.
Wednesday 12:00.-8:00 p.m
Thursday 10:00.-6:00 p.m
Friday 10:00-6:00 p.m
Saturday 10:00-6:00 p.m
One reading activity is to look for books. Visit the public library and get a library card and check-out free books to read. Ask friends and teachers, and Ms. Wolfe, our librarian, to share the names of their favorite books. Ask the librarian to help you search for award winning books. Each year the American Library Association selects children’s books for the Caldecott Medal for illustration and the Newbery Medal for writing. Check the book review sections of newspapers and magazines for recommended new children’s books. If you and your child don’t enjoy reading a particular book from the library, put it aside and pick up another one. Visit the Perris Public Library on a regular basis.
Keep in mind your child's reading level and listening level are different. When you read easy books, beginning readers will soon be reading along with you. When you read more advanced books, you instill a love of stories, introduce new vocabulary, and build the motivation that transforms children into lifelong readers. Let’s keep the focus on the gift of reading, knowing that it is the root of the opportunities that you want your child to have in life. Their life is important to you. Time passes quickly. In the blink of an eye they will be adults. The time is now. Find the time to read with them, to them, to listen to their reading, and ask them questions about the story, etc…Next step: Reading is writing and writing is reading. Have them write their own stories, create their own books, along with illustrations. Oh the places they will go!

Innovative Horizons Charter School, at Nan Sanders
The IHCS 6th Graders have had a remarkable year. At IHCS, 6th grade is the first year of middle school and the 6th graders have done an amazing job adjusting to having multiple classes and teachers. Each and every student has made great progress and shown personal and academic growth this year! Way to go 6th graders!
This month 6th grade has been focusing on argumentative writing. Students have been reading about different American heroes, including Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and military hero Jack Lucas. Students have been contemplating the question "What makes someone a hero?" and using critical thinking skills to draw their own conclusions about the qualities they look for in a personal hero. They will conclude their unit by writing an argumentative essay about who the best example of a hero is and practice defending claims with logical reasoning and solid evidence.
