First Degree Burn

  • Only burns the top layer (epidermis)
  • Is a reddish color
  • does not require medical treatment
  • May take up to a week to heal

Second Degree Burn

  • Burns the top 2 layers (epidermis and dermis)
  • May need medical treatment depending on the size of the burn
  • The skin begins to form blisters that contain white liquid
  • May take up to 3 weeks to completely heal

Third Degree Burn

  • Are the worst type of burns
  • Burns through all layers of the skin
  • May even reach the bloodstream or the bones
  • Should seek medical treatment
  • May cause death

How to prevent these burns

  • Keep children out of the kitchen while cooking
  • Install electrical outlet covers
  • Replace smoke detectors every 10 years
  • Lock up matches and lighters
  • Keep chemicals locked up and use gloves when using chemicals
  • Clean out dryer lint traps reguarly
