Coppélia
Announcing Coppélia, and a gala evening to remember
We are back from a week of fantastic performances! And more excitement awaits in 2018...
We are happy to announce that 2018's spring production will be Coppélia: The Girl With The Enamel Eyes, the classic comedy ballet about a young couple, a toymaker, and his doll, Coppélia!
The ballet Coppélia has such a rich history, having first been staged in Paris almost 150 years ago to one of the most beautiful ballet scores in history written by Léo Délibes.
Interestingly, it was the first ballet to integrate national and folk dance (the mazurkas & czardas) with ballet, thus starting one of classical ballet's most continuous and worthy traditions.
Southern California Ballet first premiered this production 15 years ago, and it has been 10 years since it was last performed here. Unfortunately, many of the costumes were never realized from the original designs, and the set was only rented as Southern California Ballet had already invested a great deal of money on the costumes it was able to afford having made.
Martha Leebolt and Toby Batley, Southern California Ballet's new artistic directors, have decided to revive this classic title and bring it back to the stage for all our dancers and audience to enjoy. They hope to finish as much of what was started back in 2002 by Sylvia Palmer, SCB's founding director, as possible!
We are so excited that this amazing ballet is going to be brought back to life!
But, we cannot put this production on without the help and support of our community. As such, this year's gala fundraising evening, at the Rancho Bernardo Country Club on February 10, 2018, will be helping to support the revival of this wonderful ballet!
For $65, you can enjoy a gala evening to remember, with dinner, dancing, an exclusive preview of Coppélia, and entertainment from the Greg Douglass Band, formerly of The Steve Miller Band & co-writer of the hit “Jungle Love."
So put it in you calendars!
