Love & Logic Parenting Pointers
As we have progressed through ways to give away control, you have probably realized that each one gives away a little less control. So, asking questions gives away the most control, followed closely by using enforceable statements and then giving choices. Once we move to consequences, the child is beginning to lose some control because of the choices he or she has made. However, there are effective ways to give consequences and still allow your children have some control. You do that by having them state the consequences for their behavior. The more talking they do, the less you do, and the more they think about their decisions and what they need to do differently next time. When they state the consequence, they are doing the talking and they can't focus on your words, especially if you have a propensity toward anger rather than empathy when delivering consequences. If you are the one who is stating the consequence, using empathy along with consequences is the most effective way, using consequences by themselves can be somewhat effective, but delivering them with anger is ineffective and results in kids being mad at you rather than at themselves. Consequences delivered with empathy rather than anger allows the learning to take place and prohibits the child from weaseling out of their original poor choice or misbehavior by focusing on your anger rather than on their decisions.
