What a great week to be a STALLION!
Last week was an awesome week, and things will be even better this week! We are going to implement the second half of our Spring Semester changes so please remind your stallions of the following changes:
1. Structured Lunches will continue – Teachers will escort their classes to the cafeteria each lunch period.
2. Lanyards and IDs – All students will be required to wear their ID around their neck at all times during the day. This starts on 2/19/2019. Students can buy a school ID at the attendance office before school for $3 if they have lost their free one. We do not sell school IDs during the instructional day.
3. Added Duties throughout the Building – Teachers/staff assigned to duty locations during each passing period. Teachers will be present in their pods/hallways pushing students to class and addressing behavior/dress code concerns. Teachers are in the hall to help with traffic flow.
4. Character Education Lessons – The counselors will start pushing into classrooms with character ed lessons and Mr. Bradley will also start doing these during lunch.
5. One Way Hallways – The front and back halls will now be one way. The back hallway will go from the "B" House/Gym area to the "A" House. The front hallway will go from the "A" House area to the "B" House. Traffic will be two-way in the breezeway, A & B House, 300 Hall, and 500 Hall.
6. Constable presence – We now have a constable that will be following students into Greensbrook after school to ensure student safety.
7. Campus Wide Restroom Passes – Students will receive a punch/initial card that can be placed in their ID holder. This punch card will have 8 horseshoes on it. It will be used in ALL classes when a student needs to use the restroom. If a student runs out of horseshoes, they may trade a lunch detention for a restroom pass. It is each student’s responsibility to keep up with their restroom pass.
8. Additional Administrative Support – Dr. Carrier is a new administrative team member who will be on campus this spring.
9. 15/15 Rule – No students are allowed out of class during the first 15 minutes of each class period and the last 15 minutes of each class period.
Thanks for all that you do!
See you around the campus...
Remember, we are the Best school with the Best students and the Best faculty and staff. Good, Better, Best!!! Never let it rest, until your good gets better and your better gets best!
Sincerely,
Leroy Bradley II

One School, One Book
Dear Parent/Guardian: This month our school will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book™. Every student will have access to the same book titled Fish in Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity. Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. Our 6th grade students will read the book with their ELA teachers and our 7th and 8th grade students will read it with their electives teachers. However, all students will have access to additional copies in the library, which they may check out. With the One School, One Book™ program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, and even administrative staff will all be following along together. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home.

For President’s Day today, spark a lively family discussion. Share your ideas about what makes a good leader. Then, ask each person what he would do if he were president for a day. Would he change the legal voting age? Help the environment?

Remind your teen that when phone apps are updated, privacy settings might change and make her personal information public. Suggest that she opt out of automatic updates and get notifications instead. Then, she can review the changes before installing.

Try this math game. Set a target number (25). Remove the word cards from an Uno deck, and deal 4 cards to each player. Everyone makes a math problem using his cards and tries to get closest to the target. So 1, 2, 4, and 9 might be 2 x 9 + 4 + 1 = 23. Closest number wins.

Reviewing information in several different ways makes your teen more likely to remember it. Suggest that she be creative. She might use colored markers to create a “word cloud” of chemistry terms for a quiz or turn her literature assignment into a comic strip.

Instead of constantly reminding your child to do a chore, give him a deadline and let him sort out when to do it. You might say, “You need to wash the dishes before bed.” You’ll encourage him to manage his time and be more responsible.

Boost thinking skills with a homemade version of Pictionary. Write words or phrases on slips of paper (“opera,” “cat’s whisker,” “trombone”). Take turns choosing a slip and doodling clues. Whoever figures out the word or phrase first gets to sketch next.

Good summarizing skills help your teen take notes. To practice, ask her to sum up an episode of her favorite show or a recent movie she watched. Encourage her to stick to the important details by limiting her summary to three sentences.

Another GREAT week in the Elective Department!
Art Department - Mr. Cleaves
Please stop by the display window on the 500 hallway to see the students tessellation project. A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellations can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries.
Band - Ms. Tieman and Mr. Ross
Please be sure your student is practicing daily.
Choir - Ms. McShan
The choir had an awesome Valentine's day. Each student got to sing head to head against Ms. McShan in a game show called "BEAT MCSHAN. Two classes even won the game!!! I love these kiddos. Please Keep our future concerts in mind. Choral Canvas is in April and Pop Show shortly after in May. Followed by our trip to DALLAS!!! More information will be sent home as these activities get closer.
Civil Air Patrol (CAP) - Lt Col Peace and Capt Roland
CAP I cadets will begin studying Module 6 Chapter 3 "Living and Working in Space." We will learn how humans are spending more time in space and how the body changes with extended exposure to micro-gravity.
CAP II cadets will learn how gliders use the environment to obtain altitude. We will build our own gliders and fly them in the hallway. Our lessons will continue on as we investigate how CAP provides several opportunities for cadets to pursue glider training.
CAP III cadets will identify the basic layout of a general aviation airport and learn to identify various taxiway and runway markings.
