SC-941 AFJROTC Unit Evaluation
“The Air Force Junior ROTC cadets of D. W. Daniel High School in Central, SC earned an overall unit assessment score of 'Exceeds Standards'…the highest rating attainable…during their evaluation on 13-Dec-2019. Maj Robert T. Childress and CMSgt Todd G. Preisch created a dynamic and supportive learning environment coupled with an excellent community outreach. The instructors provided outstanding leadership in administering the cadet-centered citizenship program. The D. W. Daniel High School cadets performed exceptionally well and took great pride in leading and accomplishing their unit goals. The D. W. Daniel High School Air Force ROTC citizenship program is making a positive impact on the cadets, the school and the community.”
SC-941 State Championship Raider Meet
The SC-941 Flying Lions competed in the Raider State Championship Meet on December 14 at Blythewood High School. There were a total of 6 events: a rope bridge, a quarter-mile cross country litter carry through several obstacles requiring teamwork and physical stamina, a vehicle pull, a physical fitness challenge that consisted of several obstacles to negotiate, a 5k road march, and an 800-meter knot-tying relay. The Flying Lions fell short of 3rd place by a total of just 4 seconds.
JROTC Leadership Academic Bowl
All JROTC units are allowed one Academic Team consisting of four cadets; they may be freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. Two alternates may be named and may participate in the online testing; however, alternates are not required. The top teams will compete in Washington, DC. Only four team members may attend the JROTC Leadership Academic Bowl. The competition will be live streamed during the Championship. One of the main goals of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT. However, many JROTC instructors are understandably interested in measuring how well their cadets are learning the JROTC curriculum. Therefore, they will have a mix of JROTC curriculum as well as English, Math, and Science questions in each level of the competition. The JROTC curriculum questions will focus primarily on leadership preparation, wellness and fitness, group/team dynamics, and communication skills. A few questions about current events are also included – focusing on national and international news, particularly international relations, politics, business, and science. All of the current events questions will be taken from major media available on television, the internet, and in daily newspapers.
