A Note From The Principal

Dorr Families,

A week of the school year is behind us and we are off to a great start. Thank you for sending your students to school prepared and ready to learn. Their excitement and level of engagement is at a high level!

This year WUS is engaging in a program called Capturing Kids’ Hearts. We are committed to building relationships with students. CKH states, “The mission with our kids is a simple one: TO WIN THEIR HEARTS and TO LEAD THEM TO THEIR PERSONAL BEST.” The Dorr Press will contain ideas and strategies that may be useful at home, further connecting home and school.

Finally, this Dorr Press has a lot of policy and procedure information. Please read it to the very end.

Best Regards,

Mrs. Seniura

Don't Miss A Beat! Here Is What Is Happening In Music Class!

Hello Dorr families! If you are unaware, your child’s music teacher loves being an outdoors man as much as I love music. This year, just for fun, I’m having a poster board for fish pictures of our students and staff. I’d like to invite you to send any pictures of your child with a fish that you would like to share. Feel free to send a picture from this summer or especially the fish you catch during this school year. At this time, I’d like to limit the number of pictures for each child to two, so we can have as many students share as possible. Please send printed pictures to be shared (no electronic pictures) as we will be hanging them on a board for all to see. I hope everyone enjoys our board and has great luck fishing this year.

Sincerely,

Mr. Truswell

Arrival And Dismissal Procedures

Drop off and pick up are the most chaotic and sometimes dangerous times for a school. Your child's safety is our top priority. Below you will find our morning drop off and our afternoon pick up procedures. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with these procedures to make the first day of school a positive experience from start to finish!

Morning Drop Off

Big picture
As the map shows above, please form a single file line for student drop off. Parents are asked to only allow their student to exit the vehicle once they have reached the staff member located in the area of the yellow star. Please use the time waiting in line to make sure your student is prepared to exit your vehicle once you reach the unloading area. Once your child exits the car, please follow the car in front of you to exit the parking lot. Please do not pull out and around others as this may slow the flow of traffic.

Once parents have dropped off their student, the student will be greeted by an adult and directed to the door. There they will be given assistance, if needed, to find their classroom.

Afternoon Pick up

Pick Up Procedures

Plans change, and that's ok! If you know you need to pick your child up on a specific day, please send a note to the teacher that day. If plans change and you were not able to send a note, you must call the office and a note will be delivered to your child. Students with no notes will follow their normal dismissal routine.

All same day pick up/change in routine requests must be made by calling the office no later than 3:25pm. This ensures we have time to get the information to the appropriate people. After 3:25, the office staff will be unavailable as they will be assisting with, and monitoring end-of-day routines with students throughout the building.

Students will sit with their cohorts in an assigned pick up area inside the school. Parents are asked to line up outside, respecting social distancing guidelines. A school official will greet parents in the line and ask that you sign out your child. Please keep in mind that your child's safety is our number one priority. Our staff may ask you to present photo ID during this process. Once you have signed your child out please step onto the grass area and wait for your child. They will be brought to you.

Bus Changes

Any bus change requests need to be made first to the Transportation dept. A Safety Freeze is in effect the first three weeks of every school year. During this time, no busing changes will be allowed. You must make transportation requests prior to riding the bus and WUS suggests making those arrangements as soon as you are aware that you will need bus transportation. The Transportation Department and bus drivers will not accept notes or phone calls from students or parents for any alternate bus stop requests. Requests must be made 3 days in advance unless it is related to an emergency situation at home. This allows time to process the request and communicate to the drivers the appropriate documentation for the safety of the students. If you have any questions, please contact Transportation at 269-792-2262 or email transportation@waylandunion.org.

Breakfast/Lunch Information

The federal program that allowed Wayland Union Schools to offer free meals to all students during the 2021-2022 school year has expired. This means that students must once again pay for meals provided by the school.

Meal prices are as follows:

Elementary Breakfast: $2.00

Elementary Lunch: $2.75

You can make payments directly to your child's lunch account by using the Parent Portal. Cash or check payments can be brought to the school. Our computerized lunch system makes serving your child much easier and faster. Features such as real time access to your student's balance and account history are available through the Parent Portal.

Breakfast will again be served as a "grab and go" style. Students will enter the cafeteria and grab their breakfast. They will then proceed directly to their class. No students will sit in the cafeteria to eat their breakfast.

Lunch and snack times and procedures will be covered by your students teacher.

You may qualify for free/reduced breakfast/lunch rates. Click the link below to access the free/reduced lunch application form as well as current lunch menus and up to date information impacting the Food Service department!
