Social-Emotional News from Mrs. Holok
As your child adjusts to a new grade and bigger expectations, you might see changes in their behavior, emotions and attitude. Here are a few tips for helping your child manage these sometimes stressful changes:
- Acknowledge when your child seems stressed. Let them know that you understand change is hard.
- Listen to your child. Let them tell you the good and the bad parts of their day.
- Help them identify their feelings. Finding the right feeling word or words can reduce stress
- Validate their feelings. Try not to tell your child he or she shouldn’t feel a certain way.
- Remind your child not to compare themselves to others. Every child learns differently and at their own pace.
- Tell your child how important school is and doing their best even when they don’t want to. Be understanding yet firm in your expectations. This is challenging but will pay off!

Personal Safety Education for Students:
In order to meet legal requirements, Crown Point school counselors and home-school facilitators will be providing age appropriate, research-informed student personal safety sessions beginning September 2019 and completing by December 2019. At the elementary level, students will learn the Protect Yourself Rules with their counselor or home-school facilitator in a classroom session of 30-40 minutes. Parents can view the Protect Yourself Rules and related materials at the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation website fightchildabuse.org. This is the same programming that was used last year as well. Parents are encouraged to contact Mrs. Holok (jholok@cps.k12.in.us) or Mr Ciochina (nciochina@cps.k12.in.us) or at 663-0047 if you have any questions.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Attention KG parents: Please turn in KG physical papers as soon as possible. Call our nurse with any questions, thank you!
Attention: If your child has a Dr. note restricting them from PE they must sit out from recess. They can sit on the bench with a book or game. This is to keep them safe from further injury. If you have any questions please contact our nurse, Mrs. Schurch.
Regarding Taking Medication at School - Remember that ALL medications must be accompanied by doctor & parent notes. Otherwise the medication cannot be given at school. All medication must be in its original container. All prescription medication must have the correct information on the label. Also, no cough drops, or essential oils are allowed at school unless accompanied by doctor & parent notes. No child should be bringing medication to school in order to self medicate.
Regarding Illness - Please keep all sick children home if they are running a fever of 100.0 or above, vomiting, or have diarrhea. A child running a fever can return to school once he/she has been fever free for 24 hours.
