What is Cleft Palate?
Cleft Palate is a facial and oral malformation. It occurs very early in pregnancy, while baby is still developing. It is a physical separation of the two sides of the upper lip, and looks like a narrow opening or gap.
Causes
Most causes are unknown. Can be related to some medications mother may have taken during pregnancy. May be a result of exposure to viruses or chemicals while in the womb.
Complications
Child may have eating problems, ear infections or hearing loss, speech problems, or dental problems.
Treatment
People with cleft lip/ cleft palate usually need 1-2 surgeries depending on the severity. Most will need a bone graft & later, braces to straighten the teeth. They will need early dental care, orthodontic care, and prosthodontic care.
