Eighth Grade Newsletter

March 9, 2014

Dear Parents,

Did you remember to 'spring ahead' this morning?

Spelling Bee

Good luck to Anna Zahner who competes in the Regional Spelling Bee on Sunday, March 16 at the State Theater in Traverse City for a chance to go to the National Spelling Bee.

Students should have a Holocaust related book (fiction or non-fiction) that they are reading outside of class. I have asked them to be 1/4 of the way through the book by Tuesday, when we will have our first book discussion groups. We will be writing research papers on a Holocaust topic. Students can access all the information in my iTunes U course. You can access it on an iPad by clicking here: https://itunesu.itunes.apple.com/audit/COEE3X8ZK5 or finding the Charlevoix Public Schools listing in the iTunes U app.

Washington DC Trip

Hotel room were reserved on Friday, March 7. If you are still planning to register your child for the trip, you will be placed on a waiting list until we can verify the availability of a hotel room. The trip is less than two months away, so if you register you will need to pay the full price up-front.

Our itinerary is shaping up nicely and includes visits to the Capitol Building, the Holocaust Museum, the Newseum, and the National Cathedral. Representatives from our class will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. We will have a dinner cruise on the Potomac on Wednesday evening and lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe on Friday afternoon.

The last day to turn in Oleson's slips for 8th graders is Thursday, March 27!
