EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING IN PR
2-5 DECEMBER 2015 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO
ACURIL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL WILL HOLD ITS MID-YEAR MEETING IN SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
The Executive Council of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL) will hold its mid-year meeting in San Juan of Puerto Rico, from 2 to 5 December 2015. The Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technologies (EGCTI), of the University of Puerto Rico, will be the main venue for the meeting.
The work of the mid-year meeting will be led by Dr. Elizabeth Pierre-Louis, a graduate from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, who presides ACURIL 2015-2016. She coordinates the FOKAl Library programs in Haiti. (Fondation Connaissance et Liberté / Fondasyon Konesans Ak Libèrte (Foundation for Knowledge and Liberty).
Key points in the meetings’s agenda will consider:
1) the evaluation of the 2015 conference held in Paramaribo, Suriname, in June 2015, under the presidency of Ms. Jane W. Smith;
2) the program of the ACURIL 2016 Conference to be held in Haiti on 5-9 June, under the theme Leadership: A bridge between tradition and innovation in libraries, archives and museums of the Caribbean.
ACURIL president Pierre-Louis has chosen the Leadership theme observing that library, archive and museum professionals are all confronted to change: with new technologies, new audiences, new services, and new challenges. Also Pierre-Louis pinpoints that traditional workforce is retiring and it is very important to have a legacy for all information professionals. Leadership is seen as tool as well as a philosophy to bridge the gap between changing times and expectations.
At the end of ACURIL 2016 Conference, Atty. Héctor Rubénn Sánchez Fernández, ACURIL’s Vice-President/President-Elect, will assume the presidency from 2016-2017 leading up to the conference to be held in Puerto Rico in 2017. Sánchez-Fernández, a graduate from the University of Puerto Rico, chairs the Association of Law Librarians in Puerto Rico and directs the Law Library at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. The third topic on the mid-year agenda will consider ACURIL’s Conference 2017, to be held in Puerto Rico, under the theme Multidisciplinary Research in the Caribbean.
At the December mid-year meeting, Execuive Council members from Aruba, Bahamas, Guadeloupe , Haiti, Dominican Republic, St. Maarten , Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago , United States and Puerto Rico, representatives of thelibrary field, will be participating.
