December Monthly Focus: Accelerated Reader Refresher
AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Students pick books at their own level and read it at their own pace. When finished, students take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that they understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help students set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Students will read books, take AR tests, and receive incentives as they grow and earn points!
The students on each grade level with the most AR points will win a bike!
Teachers who fully support the program and push their students will win a Teacher Power Pack and gift card!
Need help with developing a process that works for you in your classroom, please email me @ drrice@atlanta.k12.ga.us

What Should Students Know Before Visiting the Media Center?

What is ZPD and why is it important to students and teachers?
Reading within the optimal range as identified by ZPD is a key component of successful reading practice and goal-setting. Paired with consistent and meaningful reading practice, ZPD can help teachers guide their students toward growth, ultimately preparing them for college and career success.

THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT!
LITERACY APPS FOR IPADS
Check out a few literacy apps to be used on your scholars' ipads. Students in the 1st and 2nd grades who are a part of the TABLET2READ pilot will find these apps especially useful as they build and refine reading skills. I would be happy to assist you with incorporating the use of these apps into your lessons. You may also sign up for a time slot for your class to visit the media center to work with these apps and many more! Just email me... drrice@atlanta.k12.ga.us PHONICS: FUN ON THE FARM APP Phonics: Fun on the Farm app with its systematic phonics method of reading instruction uses the best practices for teaching reading. It covers essential reading sub-skills including phoneme recognition, letter-sound relationships, letter writing, blending sounds to form words, spelling, and reading words and simple sentences. | STARFALL I'M READING APP Starfall I'm Reading app develops comprehension and reading fluency in beginning and advancing readers. The stories in this app can be read aloud to model the qualities of fluent reading: intonation, expression, inflection and rate. This app will help students make the leap from learning to read, to reading to learn and includes Plays, Folk Tales, Greek Myths, and more. | PIRATE PHONICS 2 APP Pirate Phonics 2 is packed with new phonics and six new islands to explore, including a blending island, where children learn the sounds made when phonics are put together. Join Blackbeard and the pirate children on another adventure featuring many new challenges as children continue to learn to read. The 5 new treasure islands introduce the phonics one by one and then use blends to form simple words. |

SEL BOOK OF THE MONTH
ISH By Peter H Reynolds
A creative spirit learns that thinking “ish-ly” is far more wonderful than “getting it right” in this gentle fable from the creator of the award-winning picture book The Dot.
Ramon loved to draw. Anytime. Anything. Anywhere.
Drawing is what Ramon does. It's what makes him happy. But in one split second, all that changes. A single reckless remark by Ramon’s older brother, Leon, turns Ramon’s carefree sketches into joyless struggles. Luckily for Ramon, though, his little sister, Marisol, sees the world differently. She opens his eyes to something a lot more valuable than getting things just “right.” Combining the spareness of fable with the potency of parable, Peter Reynolds shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames with care.
