This Week in 3rd Grade:
This week in 3rd grade:
Congratulations to 3rd grade! They did an outstanding job on our Leader In Me assembly. The 3rd grade team received many compliments to our students from other grade level teachers. Way to go! (See below for a link to the Facebook Live video)
Math:
Unit 5 returns to the study of multiplication, especially as it relates to division. Students again build arrays, but use them to model and solve division as well as multiplication problems. Story problems play a major role in the first two modules, helping students to connect their everyday experiences with division to more formal mathematical concepts. As they solve and pose story problems, students encounter two different interpretations of division—sharing and grouping—and have numerous opportunities to build understandings of both.

Reading/Writing:
In reading we will continue to delve into Traditional Literature. We introduced the students to Fairy Tales last week and will move into Tall Tales this week. This is always a favorite of the students...and the teachers! We may even get a visit from Paul Bunyan!
In writing the students will finish up their expository writing pieces. An expository piece writes to explain or inform the reader of a topic. They will work on organizing thoughts and selecting the important details to include include in their pieces. They will also learn about using facts only in their expository pieces rather than their opinions.
Science: We are continuing Machines Matter. In this unit students will learn that forces cause change and that energy exists in many forms. Students are introduced to mechanical energy and build on their understanding of light, sound, and thermal energy in everyday life. Students demonstrate how pushing and pulling can change the position and motion of objects. Students observe forces, such as magnetism and gravity, acting on objects.
Parent help needed this week!! Your science teacher will be sending an email asking for parent volunteers this whole week to work with students on Simple Machine stations in the Science Lab.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win
This month your student will be learning about Habit 4: “Think Win-Win”.
In the win-win mind-set, people opt for “we” instead of “I.” The goal is to cooperate and seek solutions so both parties can walk away winners. If you come to the table thinking only one person can win (win-lose), there won’t be an effort to cooperate or problem solve. By the same token, if you come to the table expecting to lose (lose-win), you play the martyr and resentment builds. The principle of the win-win mind-set is this: “What is important to another person must be as important as the other person is to you.”
Truly, thinking Win-Win, or always thinking about another as well as yourself is one of the great mental habits we can teach our kids. After all, life isn’t just about me, and it’s not just about you-- It’s about both of us.
We encourage you to partner with us in teaching your student to practice The Seven Habits at home. To learn more about The Seven Habits and how they can be used at home, visit "Parent's Place" at
