OPGES- What's it all about?
Kathy Mansfield, Library Media/Textbooks Consultant from the Kentucky Department of Education has been very helpful by sending emails with information. Many district meetings are discussing the OPGES process for librarians. Try to attend a district meeting or email Kathy if you have any questions or concerns about this new evaluation process. kathy.masfield@education.ky.gov

KLA/KASL Fall Conference
Registration is now open for the 2014 KLA/KASL Annual Conference. See the following link for access to the conference program, conference registration, and the link for hotel reservations. (Early Registration Rates by September 1st)
http://www.klaonline.org/conreg990.cfm
The Conference Planning Committee, sections, and round tables have worked hard to put together a great program. I am excited about our keynote speakers and authors, and the wide variety of interesting programs offered by our own members.
Besides the program sessions, we have 2 preconference sessions, special luncheons, business meetings, exhibits, and of course time to visit and network.
Our Thursday night social is a conference wide book discussion with the author at Sidebar. We’ll be reading Man in the Blue Moon by Michael Morris. It’s FREE but you still need to register for it.
Check out the program for all the details about the conference.
2014 Summer Reading Conference
The 2014 Summer Reading Conference will be November 3 & 4, 2014 at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington, KY. The Summer Reading Conference is a 2 day conference for librarians serving children, teens, and adults in libraries throughout Kentucky. Over the past couple of years the conference has expanded to topics beyond Summer Reading. Past presentations have included sessions on Common Core, reader’s advisory, preschool programming, drama programs, etc. This year we would like to open the conference to school librarians, as well as public librarians. We will have a special one-day registration option for school librarians on November 4.
The general theme for this Summer Reading Program is “Heroes and Villains” and the slogans are:
Children’s: Every Hero Has a Story
Teen: Unmask
Adult: Escape the Ordinary
If you wish to stay at the Marriott, we have a small block of rooms that will be held for us. They are $169.00 per night. To reserve one of these rooms you can book online at https://resweb.passkey.com/go/SUMMERREADINGPROGRAM or call 1-877-901-6632 and ask for the Summer Reading Program or Department of Libraries room block.
Please direct any questions to Heather Dieffenbach (heather.dieffenbach@ky.gov) at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.

edCamp Kentucky
Fellow Librarians,
Good evening. I hope you all are enjoying the summer. I wanted to let you know that the very first Edcamp Kentucky will be on October 25, 2014, at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown.
Below is a short video that gives a brief overview of what edcamps are all about. It is still a relatively new concept and aligns closely with the sharing and collaboration that happens 24/7 through social media services like Twitter. This page of the Edcamp Kentucky website also provides some key features.
This is a FREE and commercial/vendor-free event and I think it would be awesome if we had a strong representation of school librarians there. I know we have tons of dedicated educators out there who could both benefit and share their knowledge at an event like this one. The location and date will not work for everyone, but there are plans for Edcamp Kentucky to tour around the state in the future.
You can register at this link. You can also follow Edcamp Kentucky on Twitter, and on Google+.
Cheers,
James Allen

Red Knit Cap Girl and the Reading Tree by Naoko Stoop
One day Red Knit Cap Girl and her friends discover a hollow tree in the middle of the forest. What can be done with one ordinary tree? "I will keep my book in this nook so everyone can read it," Red Knit Cap Girl says.
But the tree isn't only for books. Little by little, one by one, the animals share their unique gifts and turn the ordinary tree into a special spot for everyone to enjoy!

Consider trying a BLOG
We use edublogs.org at our school. It is the one blog web site not blocked in our district.
Feel free to check out my blog. http://darlahzweifel.edublogs.org/ I am not a "Library Girl" or "The Daring Librarian", but I am working on letting people know how important books, libraries, and students are to me. I know I am way behind in the BLOG world, but I figure you have to start somewhere. Happy blogging!
