Principal's Message

Black Bear Friends and Family,

All of our events from the past week were a huge success. Funds raised by PTO from Muffins for Moms and Donuts for Dads are used to benefit our students in many ways. The school uses this money to help with testing incentives, build classroom libraries, enhance the outdoor classroom, etc. Also, the library gets a percentage of book fair sales in "Scholastic Dollars." The libarian will use this to purchase more books for our library. We thank our parent community for your support in these events.

Our system-wide tornado drill will be Wednesday, Feb 13 from around 8:35 am to 8: 50 am. Students will practice the proper procedures to stay safe in the event of severe weather. Our teachers do an excellent job of preparing our students in a developmentally appropriate manner. This is also a great opportunity to review and discuss the safety plan for your home; I have included a link that may help you with your planning and discussion. As a reminder, traffic in and out of the building will be limited during our tornado drill.

Create a Home Safety Plan for Your Family

Sincerely,

Luke Bergeson

Principal

AR Weekly Word Count

Our next school-wide AR Word Count Goal is 20,000,000 words. For a frame of reference, each Harry Potter book is about 200,000 words. The entire Harry Potter series contains a little over 1,000,000 words. This Word Count Goal is a combined effort of the entire school. We will have an AR Dance Party around 2:15 pm on the day we meet our next goal of 20,000,000 words.

Accelerated Reader Incentives

"Reading makes you a smarty!" As I see students reading I will be passing out smarties.

AR pARties: As students meet their 9 week AR goal they will be invited to an AR party at the end of the grading period.

"We stuck to reading!" Students who meet their 9 week goal for all three 9 weeks will get a piece of duct tape. What will they do with this duct tape, you ask? Stick Mr. Bergeson to the wall, of course!

School-wide Word Count Benchmarks

50,000,000 words: 50s Sock Hop; Dress from the 1950s

80,000,000 words: I Love the 80s; Dress from the 1980s

Alabama $1 Million Schools

Top 50 in the State!

The AL State Dept of Education determined the top 50 schools to receive a $20,000 grant by measuring the percentage of third grade students that met their Scantron reading growth targets in the 2017-18 school year (fall to spring). All Alabama public schools with a third grade, of which there are approximately 1,071, were included. Chestnut Grove Elementary is one of the two Decatur-area schools to receive this recognition!

Beginning of the School Day

Students are permitted to enter the building at 7:15 a.m. to go to the cafeteria. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 7:30-7:45. Students will be allowed to report to their classrooms at 7:30 a.m. Students who arrive to school prior to 7:15 a.m. will not have adult supervision. School starts at 7:45 each day. Students should be seated and ready to learn in their classrooms at 7:45 a.m.

Arrival and Dismissal

Students should be dropped off in front of the school, not the rear.

For their safety, students should exit vehicles from the passenger side and not the driver’s side.

Please do not drop students off in the front parking spots. This, too, may jeopardize the safety of our students.

Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First grade students will be picked up in the front of the school in the parking lot closest to the playground and will be dismissed at 2:40. Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders will be picked up in the parking lot closest to the track and will be dismissed at 2:40. If you have children in different grades or you carpool, they will be picked up in the car line designated by the youngest child’s grade.

As you go through the car line, the codes for all children you are picking up should be displayed on the front dash or visor on the passenger side. Teachers will be walking down the car line calling in the codes. Inside, your child/children will be called and brought to the car line to wait for you at the designated area.

Drivers without the card(s) will be asked to move out of the car line, park in the parking lot, and come to the office to check out the student(s) at the end of dismissal.

Car dismissal will begin at 2:40. Walkers will be dismissed at 2:35. Students should not walk to meet parents in vehicles to avoid the car line. Early check-out for students needs to be done by 2:20 p.m. Please note that teachers are officially off duty at 3:00 p.m. Please make arrangements to pick up your child each day. Extended day services are available at Chestnut Grove

Visitors

All visitors to Chestnut Grove must sign-in at the school office. This includes parents or others who join their child for lunch, bring supplies to a student, or serve as volunteers. All visitors must wear nametags received from the office. Anyone checking a student out from school must be on our contact list and must show a valid ID. Parents can update contact lists through InfoSnap or by visiting the front office. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping your students safe.

Student Check-out Reminder

As a reminder early check-outs for students should be done before 2:20 p.m. This ensures an efficient dismissal as we prepare to get our students home safely. Thank you for understanding.
